CONTEXT

In the context preceding Mark 14:66-72.
Jesus has been arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane
He was betrayed by Judas by means of a prolonged or elaborate kiss.
He was taken to the high priest’s house for an illegal nighttime trial, where the chief priests, elders, and scribes gather to find testimony against Him -their sole purpose is to sentence Him to death.
Unlike the other Disciples Peter follows Jesus and denies Him

TEXT ANALYSIS (v66-72)

I. 1st Denial
66 And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he went out into the entryway.
Luke 22:56“And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.””
The accuser knows us
II. 2nd and 3rd Denial
69 And when the servant-girl saw him, she began once more to say to the bystanders, “This is one of them!” 70 But again he was denying it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are also a Galilean.” 71 But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this man you are talking about!”
Second accusation is a man and a woman - aorist kept on denying (imperfect)
John 18:25“Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.””
Luke 22:60“But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.”
Mark 14:69“And when the servant-girl saw him, she began once more to say to the bystanders, “This is one of them!””
Matthew 26:72“And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.””
The world expects us to act like Christ even though they will not accept our testimony
Third accusation
Matthew 26:74“Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.”
III. Prophetic Fulfillment and Remorse
72 And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said the statement to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And throwing himself down, he began to cry.
Luke 22:61 “And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.””
Matthew 26:75“And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and cried bitterly.”
At the moment Jesus was being challenged to prophesy His prophesies were coming true
Mark 14:65 “And some began to spit at Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in the face.”
Mark 14:72“And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said the statement to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And throwing himself down, he began to cry.”
Observations:
Peter: Experienced godly sorrow
2 Corinthians 7:10“For godly sorrow produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world brings about death.”
Luke 22:31–32““Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat. “But I have prayed earnestly for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, once you have returned, strengthen your brothers.””
Judas: Experienced the sorrow of the world
Matthew 27:4–5“saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to that yourself!” And he threw the pieces of silver into the sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.”
Acts 1:17–19““For he was counted among us and received his share in this ministry.” (Now this man acquired a field with the price of his unrighteousness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. And it became known to all who were living in Jerusalem; so that in their own language that field was called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)”

What is something that I need to do - who needs to be told

Mark: v71 - the fear of man is a snare - the solution is to fear God more
Luke 12:4–5““But I say to you, My friends, do not fear those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. “But I will show you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!”
Who is a fearful one?
