The Last Supper

The Last Supper (Jn 13:1–30).
The attention of Jesus now shifts from the crowds and the Jewish leaders
to those who were his own sheep,
the small group of close disciples
who represent the broader body of disciples and believers.
Have you ever realized that we have a CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE?
Not much that goes on in this world is effected by us, or effects us.
We read about natural events, fires, major happenings but it doesn’t effect us direct.
We can follow the events in another country or state but its effect on us in likely zero.
So it goes with the CIRCLES of Influence
To simplify I suggest
we have four rings inside of the world
Four Rings of Connection
Outer ring --- who we meet interact with and likely will never interact again
Middle ring --- those we know from work, gym, or even church
Inner ring — our general friends
intimate relationship — Spouse or those friends that are closest to our heart
I think we will sadly see an example today of how the deeper our relationship with people get to our smallest,
most intimate circle the GREATER THE JOY and LOVE, but the DEEPER THE HURT BETRAYAL AND PAIN.
Jesus has interacted with all four but
in our verses today
He is sitting with His closest earthly friends
people that love Him
These passages are often referred to as the Last Supper
So remember these two Words today
SUPPER AND SERVING
We have read numerous times that Jesus said “His time has not come, but...
today we read the change
John 13:1 (ESV)
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
These are the people that He loves most on this earth
At his last meal with them
the central incident is the action of Jesus in washing their feet.
What is Jesus demonstrating to us?
What are we to learn today?
We have a great explanation from Paul in ...
Philippians 2:5–8 (ESV)
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Jesus came to SERVE
and if He did we SHOULD

Washing of the Feet

John 13:3–11 (ESV)
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,
4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”
7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”
8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.”
11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
What does this all mean?
This is interpreted not only as a symbol of Jesus serving the disciples
but as an example of how they are to serve one another in humility.
Jesus came to SERVE
and if He did we SHOULD
The washing is purely of the feet and not of the whole body
Jesus was going to wash them completely in a few days
so we must wonder and ponder
Jesus answers His closest most loved Friends
John 13:12–17 ESV
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Jesus wants us to serve others
I don’t think we should allow ourselves
to focus on what is easy or convenient or within our comfort zone
But as Jesus --- Follow the Will of God
To be always aware of the opportunity to serve
How about the tough employee or co-worker?
or our kids
or someone that we dislike
or someone we don’t know
--- and is DIFFERENT
We are called to serve
it is not a matter of opportunity but of OBEYING Him,
just as Christ is teaching here.
We must be like Jesus OBEYING and DOING the WILL of the Father
We MUST BE WASHED CLEAN
to enter the PRESENCE of the FATHER
to experience the TRINITY of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
to GLORIFY the Father,
to BELIEVE and KNOW the SON
and to ABIDE in the HOLY SPIRIT in an
ACTIVE and AUTHENTIC RELATIONSHIP
Our verses today Disclose
important REAL CHRISTIAN attributes
Things that JESUS is leaving with US
THE TIME IS COME
We must be aware in our CIRCLES of INFLUENCE
We must know our DUTY as CHRIST FOLLOWERS
We must SERVE OTHERS
We must “WASH FEET” with the WATER OF LIFE
Friends the BIBLE is not a series of SERMONS
that are PREACHED weekly
the Bible is THE TRUTH --- THE WORD OF GOD
These and ALL SCRIPTURE are GOD BREATHED and to be USED!!
USED for Teaching, rebuking, encouraging and correcting
2 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
We must have an ACTIVE every moment FAITH
and OBEDIENCE to CHRIST
I had an amazing week again to speak of CHRIST with my OUTER CIRCLE
OWNING a business is tough but rewarding
as i drove away from three separate SALES appt on Thursday
i was overjoyed at the opportunity to SPEAK OF OUR LORD
Because i specifically do at LEAST one of two things on EVERY appt
I Tell them I am a PASTOR
or/and I tell them to have a BLESSED DAY
I do it to be ACTIVE
I want you to build this into your life
Know Christ and Make HIM Known
back to back appointments responded and great conversation happened
This is an example of our TAKE AWAY from TODAY
We serve others
we offer to WASH THEIR FEET --- or “share the Gospel”
I tell you this to motivate you to BE ACTIVE and ATTENTIVE to your FAITH
We don’t make SUNDAY CHRISTIAN because CHRIST does NOT want Sunday CHRISTIANs
So the last piece of these verses that must be DISCUSSED is.....

Betrayal

A second incident at the meal is the identification of the disciple who would betray Jesus,
despite sharing with him in the fellowship of the meal and having shared in the foot washing.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Just look at the main point of
John 13:2 ESV
2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
John 13:11 ESV
11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
John 13:18 ESV
18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’
Would you wash the feet of someone you knew was going to
torch your career
Hurt your life
Friends
I can tell you that it is hard
My wife and I were greatly betrayed 12 or so years ago by a close “Friend”
We lost so much
BUT that is not the point what happened
BUT if i knew it was going to happen as Jesus knew it was going to happen
Would i have washed this man’s feet, shared bread with Him,
Let me tell you what you already KNOW
ABSOLUTELY NOT
Would i today?
Maybe
Would i struggle to do the RIGHT THING. YES
I have grown in the LORD
John would no doubt remind us that the flesh profits nothing; it is the Spirit that conveys life.
So we must be ACTIVE and ATTENTIVE to the SPIRIT of GOD who lives inside of US
The mystery of how Judas is the victim of Satan and how this relates to God’s purpose is not taken up here
So are people victims of Satan’s schemes or are they just evil?
Would you change your view of people if the first were always TRUE
if you the people that hurt you or are going to hurt you are victims of the evil one
Does it change your heart?
It should!!
Isn’t that the WHOLE point
of your lesson Here in the GOSPEL OF JOHN
it is not about you
it is about
GOD THROUGH YOU
Glorify God by Growing Others in Christ
Showing Grace
Showing Mercy
and SHOWING LOVE
Let us have an ACTIVE and ATTENTIVE Faith
Let us LOOK to SERVE,
to ensure HUMILITY just as CHRIST JESUS.
AMEN
