ESSENTIAL DOCTRINE : ENSLAVED TO SIN
Because of the fall of Adam and Eve
all of humanity has inherited a sin nature
We are drawn toward sin and rebellion.
Human beings are enslaved to sin
continually living to forget God’s laws and follow our own
our experience of salvation through the work of Christ enables us to overcome sin’s enslavement
But we still feel the pull of sin
To break free from sin, we have to live by the power of the Holy Spirit
This is how Jesus lived throughout His life.
If we want to walk in victory over sin, then we must live like Jesus.

Teaching

To live like Jesus we must Focus on God’s plan instead of your own. Jesus was wrongly tried - Luke 22:66-71
Sanhedrin broke several rules:
Unfair
death trials lasted two days
no trial was allowed during the Passover
supposed to be based off evidence of 2-3 witnesses
least experienced vote first, high priest casted vote last = high priest cast first
illegal to convict on the criminal’s testimony
God is sovereign - means He is in control - even during the unfair trail
God planned for Jesus’s death to defeat sin
We like things to be fair
Is life still unfair? - Yes, in this life! Lunch line at camp last year
Jesus was treated unfair - did nothing wrong
He knew the Father’s will - He viewed injustice through obedience to God’s plan - instead of fighting back
Religious leaders allowed their plans to blind them to God’s plan
We cling SO tight to what WE want - we can’t hear God’s voice
We must listen to God’s voice ESPECIALLY when it’s different from our plan
To live like Jesus we must Focus on God’s truth instead of the opinions of others. Jesus was wrongly accused - Luke 23:1-5
The religious leaders falsely accused Jesus.
Don’t pay taxes
Jesus encouraged paying taxes Mark 12:17-Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.
How do you feel when you’re wrongly accused?
Emails and Letters to Jobs from EX
Jesus remained silent
Jesus was stirring things up!
The Law = look different, Jews got prideful, drove people away
Jesus preached grace and love.
To live like Jesus we must Focus on God’s commands instead of choosing to sin. Jesus was wrongly condemned - Luke 23:13-25
The crowd chose Barabbas instead of Jesus
a convicted criminal guilty of rebellion and murder
Jesus took his place
The guiltless for the guilty
The Way, the Truth, and the Life for the Wayward, Murderer, and the Lie
God Himself for sinful man
The ability to endure is something learned by trial and loss
Jesus prepared His whole life, following God, knowing His word
He endured the horrible cross because He trusted the God on the other side of its pain
He obeyed the Father because He practiced obedience daily.
Pastor Jack’s knowledge of the Bible - little by little you learn it
Jesus does the same for us
taking our sin, our condemnation which should separate us from God eternally
and making a way for us to be forgiven, made new to spend an eternity with God

CONCLUSION

Think about how crazy it is that the crowd chose Barabbas.
Remember though God is sovereign, He’s in control of everything
Barabbas’s release foreshadow’s what was coming on the cross.
Jesus willingly took the place of the vilest of sinners.
In our minds, we think Barabbas is unworthy of God’s mercy, but so are we!
Jesus does the same for us
taking our sin, our condemnation which should separate us from God eternally
and making a way for us to be forgiven, made new to spend an eternity with God
CHRISTCONNECTION Jesus was condemned to die although He did no wrong.
In this, Jesus became the perfect substitute for us, bearing our sins on the cross to provide forgiveness.
All who have trusted in Christ are no longer under condemnation but have been declared righteous by God.

HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF GOD’S LOVE TO KNOW HE ALLOWED JESUS TO BE FALSELY ACCUSED AND CONDEMNED FOR US? From our limited human perspective, we can’t fully understand the depth of God’s love for us. Compelled by His love, God willingly stepped into human flesh—through Jesus— and carried our sin and shame. God loves us so much He was willing to take our place (see John 3:16). No other love on earth could come close to God’s love. And it is only because of God’s great love for us that we can have eternal life with Him. THE CROWD’S OPINION OF JESUS DRASTICALLY CHANGED FROM WHEN HE RODE INTO TOWN (SEE MATT. 21:8-11). WHEN HAVE YOU ALLOWED OTHERS’ OPINIONS TO AFFECT YOUR OBEDIENCE? It’s difficult to not get swept up in the opinions of our friends and the people around us. It’s why our culture experiences fads in music, fashion, and sports. But it’s dangerous to allow the “crowd’s” opinion to affect your thinking about Jesus. Our standards and convictions must be based on God’s Word, and our knowledge of Christ must be founded in Scripture instead of people’s opinions. We must take anything we hear and place it next to God’s Word to determine its truth. JESUS SUFFERED IN OUR PLACE. HOW CAN YOU IMITATE JESUS IF YOU ARE CALLED TO SUFFER FOR SOMEONE ELSE? We tend to do whatever we can to avoid suffering. While we may not have to physically suffer for someone else, we may suffer for them in other ways. This could look like allowing someone else to succeed in your place. Or it may be that your reputation suffers because you befriend someone others mistreat. It’s hard for us to accept suffering, but it can have a purpose. We have to remember that God is sovereign over everything—even our suffering.
