Church what a week it has been
We have for the first time preached through the events as they happened
As a short recap for you this morning
Thursday we talked about the Lords Supper and the sacrifice that Jesus was for us
Friday we talked in detail about the beating and death of Jesus and that by His wounds we are healed
Saturday we talked about the in between day, we talked about where about the preparing of Jesus’s body and how He has shared previously that He would die and 3 days later come back to life
Which brings us to this morning
Church it has been 3 days since Jesus died
Having read the rest of the story that should give us some excitement this morning
It has been day 3 since Jesus was nailed to the cross
Remember that as they were lowering His body from the cross the women where there also
They watch Him being laid in the tomb
They went off to conduct Sabbath services and to prepare thing to finish the burial
We pick up the account of they have the spices and are walking to the Tomb
As they are walking mark gives us some insight into their conversation
Mark 16:1–3 NASB95
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”
So they are walking and one of them asks who will roll the stone away and open the tomb
It is an honest question
Remember they were there when He was buried in the tomb they had to have seen the big stone rolled in front
Again might I add they hadn’t given much thought to the previous words of Jesus
We like to say that thinking we know would have known
They were going to pay respect to their dead friend and teacher
Mark 16:4–6 NASB95
4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large. 5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.
Ok church this is it
They come either around the corner, or over the hill or from around the tree
However they come upon the grave they see the stone has been rolled away
Now is where it gets interesting
They see an open tomb where their friend and teacher was just buried a few days ago and they go right in
Me I think I would have stood back a bit and just watched
I would have looked around to see if I could see anyone
Or I would have said Hello hoping not to hear anyone but maybe hoping to hear someone
Anywho they go into the tomb and see a man wearing a white rob
In Luke he calls them dazzling clothes
You can imagine their shock already seeing the stone rolled away
Only to find someone else in the tomb who is now talking to you
He tells them don’t be shocked or scared
You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene right
Only one in the tomb
Then the angle says these 3 simple words right
Just 3 days earlier Jesus would utter 3 simple words that have forever changed the course of this world and while doing it made it possible for you and I
Who are sinful and imperfect to have a personal heart to heart relationship with the perfect God of the entire universe
Jesus said it is finish just 3 days earlier and church that changed the course of History as we know it
And now an angel will say 3 simple words that will once again change the course of History and we should have known it
HE IS RISEN
Not only where the women shocked to see the stone rolled away
Now they are shocked to see an Angel in the tomb and no Jesus
Now He speaks to them and says that the guy you are looking for is ALIVE
The angel even shows them this is where He was laid
Church we have said it before
The stone was rolled away not so Jesus could get out
He just defeated death a stone was not going to stop Him
The stone was rolled away so that we could look in and see that sure enough He is no longer there
When it says that you are to have faith in Jesus
It means to believe to truly believe that Jesus who was dead is now alive
That is what we mean to have faith in Jesus
To trust in Him
Then the angel gives them some instructions
Mark 16:7–8 NASB95
7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’ ” 8 They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
He tells them to go and tell the disciples
Go and tell me students that He is ALIVE and that He will meet up with
Just like He told you
Remember Jesus had previous said He would be handed over and have to suffer and die but that He would come back to life 3 days later
They were to go and tell their friends that Jesus was in fact alive
The Angel told them to tell the disciples and Peter
Mark is the only one who records it this way
It could be because Peter probably helped Mark right it
Or it could be Peter who just 3 days earlier had betrayed what could only be thought of as his best friend
Peter denied and swore that he didn’t know Jesus at all
And maybe Jesus wanted Peter to know that He was alive
Their would be forgiveness
I would be that most of us if not all of us probably fit into the Peter category
Maybe not with your words but it might have been your actions you denied Christ with
This morning you need to understand that there is grace and mercy are found at the cross
Forgiveness is found in the empty tomb
Yesterday we explained that Jesus’s death means we are free from sin
Church is resurrection means that we can have life through Him
One of my favorite Hymns is Because He Lives
the Chorus goes like this
“Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, all fear is gone; Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living, Just because He lives!”
Church it is because of Christ’s resurrection that you and I can have life
Praise the Lord for the death and resurrection of Jesus
When Jesus came back to life He defeated death
Paul shares this about Christ
2 Timothy 1:10 NASB95
10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
That Jesus beat death
You and I no longer have to deal with or fight the death any longer
It is all made possible through Christ
You are saved and made alive through Christ
It is through Christ that we can have life
Church Because He lives we can have life
Romans 8:11 NASB95
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
It is only through Christ that you can have life
Because of His Death on the cross you can be free from sin this morning
Would you accept that this morning
Because of His resurrection from the grave you can have life this morning
Would you accept that this morning
You might be saying I want that how do I get that
I am so glad you asked
You can be free from sin and have life this morning
Not because you came to church
Not because you gave some monies
But you can be free from sin and have life this morning only through a personal relationship with Christ
It is by repenting of your sin
Which is to stop and turn from your sin
Turn to Jesus and run to Jesus
It is by trusting and believing that Jesus is the Son of God and that God raised Him from the dead
That is why we celebrate the death and resurrection of Christ
Do you understand how much the God of the universe loves you
Not you as a group but you as the individual you are here this morning
God loves you so much He doesn’t want to leave you in the sin so He sent Jesus to deal with the sin problem
He rose Jesus from the grave to give you life
God also sent you and I the Holy Spirit to walk with us and guide us as we go about this thing called life
Jesus left us the Holy Spirit when He ascended to Heaven
We have a helper that goes with us as we do life
John 14:26 NASB95
26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
See you don’t have to go at this life alone
The Holy Spirit is there to teach you, correct you, guide you, speak truth into your life, convict you of the sin in your life, and show you truth from God
Church this is all made possible by this one weekend
It is all made possible by God sending Jesus to the cross to take your debt of sin and pay for them
It is all made possible by Jesus being buried in a tomb and 3 days later got up and walked out the grave
Church it is all made possible because Christ lives
This morning because Christ lives you can have life and have eternal life with Christ
CLOSING
I am going to ask the band to come up
As they come forward and begin to play
Would you like to make that decision to walk out of death and sin and trust Jesus this morning
That same power that rose Christ from the dead can now live in you if you make the decision to repent of your sin and trust in Jesus this morning
If you want to do that would you come to the front and speak with someone
Maybe you need to talk with someone about something else
Maybe you need to spend sometime in prayer this morning at the altar
Church it is all made possible Because He Lives
The Altar is open
