I cannot imagine what it must have been like for the followers of Jesus.
They gave there whole lives to Him, their money, their time, their will.
These people were 100% sold out and willing to do anything He asked them to do.
Now just days after seeing Him enter into Jerusalem like a conquering Hero He’s dead and buried.
What must it have been like?
But His death was not the end of the story it was just the beginning.
The resurrection of Jesus is the most significant event in history.
It is Central to Gods redemptive plan and the foundation of the gospel.
The resurrection is the essential truth apart from which there is no Christianity.
Paul explains it well: 1 Cor 15:17
1 Corinthians 15:17 ESV
17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.
You see without the Resurrection the death of Christ means nothing.
They all thought it was over and Then came Sunday!

The Empty Tomb (vv 1-3)

These women were going to the tomb to finish what had been started on the evening of the Sabbath.
The Sabbath started at Sundown on Friday.
This is why Jesus was quickly put in the tomb because it had to be done before the sun set on Friday.
Joseph and Nicodemus laid the Savior to rest.
The spices that the women were bringing were to help in 2 different ways:
The smell
The transition to bone.
This would allow for the bones to be put inside an ossuary.

Three Reasons Why Jesus Did Rise from the Dead.

First, Jesus Did not Rise from the dead, the Jewish Leaders took the body and reburied Him to keep people from knowing where the body is.
This would not have happened because as soon as people started running around saying that He was resurrected they would have produced the body and that would have been the end of it.
Also they would not have paid off the guards in Matt 28:12-15
Matthew 28:12–15 ESV
12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.
Second, The disciples took the body, if this were the case as soon as they started being persecuted for their faith then someone would have came clean.
No one is willing to die for a lie.
Third He actually did raise from the dead.
Not only do we have the empty tomb but we have the power and reassurance of the Holy Spirit to prove to us that this is the case.

The Messengers (vv 4-7)

This is the First announcement that Jesus is alive.
Much like the Angles that announced His birth, these angles announce His Resurrection.
They asked the ladies in almost a rebuke saying “why do you look for the living among the dead”.
They had heard Jesus talk about being resurrected but clearly their faith was not strong enough to believe Him because they brought the spices to put on His body.
Jesus being resurrected was so far out of the comprehension of His followers that they truly could not understand someone conquering death.

The Witness of The Women (vv 8-10)

It is a beautiful statement that the first one to report the resurrection of Jesus were women.
During this time in history women were not considered to be as reliable as men.
But Luke names all three of them which goes all the way back to the OT book of Deuteronomy this say this: Deut 19:15
Deuteronomy 19:15 ESV
15 “A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.
Not only was it three witness but it was women which puts them for the first time on the same level as men in regards to salvation.

The Unbelieving Disciple (vv 11-12)

The disciples did not believe the women because they did not have enough faith to think that Jesus would do what He said He would do.
All that He requires from us is to have faith.
