Good Friday Message
Suffering and Death of Jesus
In order to give full picture
Have to use different passages of Three books
You might feel like going back and forth
Different writers expanded on different parts
So Let the Holy Spirit have His way this morning
Allow Him to tear into your heart and allow you to contemplate on your own life
If you don't know Christ as personal savior
Listen
allow your heart and mind the opportunity to see what the savior did for you and me.
I challenge each of you to take heed to the word of God and Picture what the savior went through for each of you.
Turn with me to Luke 22:63-71
Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming. When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying, “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; and if I ask a question, you will not answer. “But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” And they all said, “Are You the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “Yes, I am.” Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
Lets have some Background which lead up to this.
Jesus has just finished Lord's Supper

When He had finished Judas betrayed Him with a kiss
We read in Matt. 27:3-5 that sold Jesus for the price of a slave or 30 pieces of silver
This was the cost paid to the owner of a slave who had been killed
Now In this passage Jesus with those who captured Him
Hasn't gotten to His pretrial yet and already being persecuted.
That night the men began to mock and strike Jesus
They Smote him which is to give a blow with the hand, or fist or a weapon
Then mocked Him in an abusive way
Then the religious elders of the day gave Him a pretrial before sending Him to Pilate.
Now Jesus is before Pilate Turn with me to Mark 15:1-14
Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “It is as you say.” The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly. Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!” But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed. Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. Answering again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” They shouted back, “Crucify Him!” But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!”
As we know Time of Passover
It was the custom to let a prisoner go

Comparison of Barabbas and Jesus
The Son of a earthly father vs. The Son Heavenly Father
Violent Insurrectionist vs. The Prince of Peace
A taker of life vs. A give of Life
Yet Jesus’ own people who were praising Him as He rode in to town on this palm Sunday Chose to Crucify Him.
Lets continue on by reading Vs Mark 15:15-22
Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. The soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort. They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; and they began to acclaim Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him. After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him. They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross. Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
He was physically abused again this time by the Roman Soldiers
They Scourged Him
Very Brutal
Many died during this

Jesus died for our Crimes which were nailed to the cross
having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Spikes through hands and ankles taking away support leaving constant pressure
Lift up to breath until to weak and could lift to breath and slowly suffocated
Jesus went through this for you and me , yet see His response
Turn with me to Luke 23:33-38
When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.” The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine, and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” Now there was also an inscription above Him, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
Father forgive them

They Continue to mock him even on the Cross
Turn back with me to Mark 15:33-39
When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.” Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
Darkness from noon to 3

Dionysious claims to have seen a great darkness in his writings at Heliopolis, Egypt in this same year
Flagon of Trolleys wrote of a Great Eclipse as never seen before near this time
We don't know how it was done but we do know it was not eclipse
it was from God

To the Jew Darkness symbolizes a curse or Judgment of God
“It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord God, “That I will make the sun go down at noon And make the earth dark in broad daylight. “Then I will turn your festivals into mourning And all your songs into lamentation; And I will bring sackcloth on everyone’s loins And baldness on every head. And I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
To the Gentile It could be showing Gods Power over their Sun Deities

then Luke 23:46 tells us He said, "Father into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus He gave up the ghost.
But then something marvelous happened

the Veil was 60 ' long 30' wide palm of mans hand thick
