Beating and Death of Jesus

Notes
Transcript

Welcome to our First Good Friday Service
As we go through the events of Easter
This evening we will look at the beating and death of Jesus
I am not sure why it is called Good Friday other than understanding that the death of Jesus all be it weird was a good thing for us
Because without it church there would be no chance for salvation for us
Isaiah 53:5 NASB95
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
To wrap our mind around that by His beating
By His scouring we are made right with God
We are healed by His beating
Which means that Jesus had to die to pay for our sin
Church do you understand this evening that your sin and my sin
nailed Jesus to the cross
But before we get to the nailing of the cross we need to understand that Jesus was beaten
He wasn’t nailed to a cross
He was beaten, His flesh was cut and ripped from His body in our place
Matthew 27:26 NASB95
26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
That word scourged is so very powerful
It means to suffer a lot as punishment
Pilate to appease the crowd thought he would be able to have Jesus beaten
Severally beaten and then in hopes to get Him released after beating Him
Matthew 27:27–31 NASB95
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. 28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. 31 After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
Church there is more to the beating of Jesus than these verses describe
Not that we should add to scripture but in reading this I don’t think we fully understand the scourging of Jesus
So let me help us understand
I want to read a few excerpts from an article we have used in the past
Dr. William D. Edwards, MD from the Mayo Clinic
Article on Physical Death of Jesus Christ
“Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripe like lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock
“Hypovolemic shock is an emergency condition in which severe blood or other fluid loss makes the heart unable to pump enough blood to the body.”
as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus’ death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier’s spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross.”
Just let that settle in your heart with scripture in mind that
1 Peter 2:24 NASB95
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
To know that by Christ’s beatings we were healed
To know that Christ willingly was beaten in my own place
When it says by His wounds we were healed
Maybe you think of scrape on the knee
But when Peter and when Isaiah says by His stripes or by His wounds we are healed this is what they mean
“Flogging was a legal preliminary to every Roman execution, and only women and Roman senators or soldiers (except in cases of desertion) were exempt. The usual instrument was a short whip (flagellum or flagellum) with several single or braided leather thongs of variable lengths, in which small iron balls or sharp pieces of sheep bones were tied at intervals Occasionally, staves also were used.
For scourging, the man was stripped of his clothing, and his hands were tied to an upright post. The back, buttocks, and legs were flogged either by two soldiers or by one who alternated positions. The severity of the scourging depended on the disposition of the soldiers and was intended to weaken the victim to a state just short of collapse or death. After the scourging, the soldiers often taunted their victim.”
Then The Doctor William Edwards goes on to give in detail the effects of the scourging of Jesus
“As the Roman soldiers repeatedly struck the victim’s back with full force, the iron balls would cause deep contusions, and the leather thongs and sheep bones would cut into the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Then, as the flogging continued, the lacerations would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles and produce quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh. Pain and blood loss generally set the stage for circulatory shock. The extent of blood loss may well have determined how long the victim would survive on the cross.”
Church that is just the beating of Jesus in great detail
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Church sin always leads to death
So the beating of Jesus wasn’t enough He would have to die to pay our debt of sin
The Crucifixion meant that after Jesus was beaten so severely He would be marched to Golgotha
That his beaten and cut open body would be laid on rough wood and that His hands and feet were nailed to the cross
John 19:16–18 NASB95
16 So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified. 17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
I imagine it sounded something like this
(HAMMERS)
Luke 23:33–34 NASB95
33 When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
After they had nailed Him to the cross
John 19:28–30 NASB95
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Jesus’s death means that we are no longer slaves to sin, Jesus paid our debt of sin
Jesus was the sacrificially lamb that paid the price of death four your sin and my sin
It is important because without the perfect lambs sacrifice we would still continually be sacrificing animals to cover our sin
Which we all know wasn’t good enough because we continually had to do it year after year
But not any more
Because Jesus on the cross cried out IT IS FINISHED
There is no more
Jesus took care of the sin problem with the cross
CLOSING
As we come to a close this evening
We will have some special music
As they sing
Maybe you are here and don’t know Jesus personal
There will be people down front who would love to talk with you about salvation
Or maybe you already have a personal relationship with Jesus and you need to spend sometime at the altar in prayer
The Altar is open
