The Baptist Faith and Message states:
The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the Church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming.
the word maundy means “the ceremony of washing the feet of the poor, especially commemorating Jesus's washing of his disciples' feet on Maundy Thursday.”
Seder is the Hebrew word for Order as the meal must follow the proper order
Turn with me to Matt. 26:26-29
Ex. 12:5-8; 11-15
According to Lev. 23:5
Leviticus 23:5 NASB95
‘In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight is the Lord’s Passover.
First of the Feast
First Full moon of spring
Shows darkness at Calvary was from God

Whole Day of Preparation

Women washed the four sets of Dishes
First Set for Milk used throughout the year
Second Set for Meat used throughout the year
Third and Fourth Set used for Passover
Kitchen was sterilized
To get any yeast out
Mom would many times begin cleaning the home floor to ceiling weeks before; however, only the father could declare the house properly cleaned
Then whole house is purged of leaven
They would play a game
The mom would put little pieces of leaven somewhere in the house
The father would search for it with a feather, wooden spoon, and a white linen towel
he would sweep the crumbs into the spoon
wrap the feather and spoon in the linen towel
And throw it into the Fire
1 Corinthians 5:6–8 NASB95
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Really Purged the leaven to be pure
Leaven represented sin
Sin in the house
Aren’t we the temple of God

The Lighting of the Candle at night

Lit two white candles
Women were separated in worship
Passover Does not start until the Candle is lit
Always Done by a Woman
With a special prayer which said, “Blessed are you oh Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has set us apart by His commandment and commanded us to light the lights of passover”
For the Light was to be brought into the world by a woman
Showing Messiah’s Humanity
Christ was human
Jesus got tired
Hungry
Cried
Felt pain of crucifixion
Fully Human and Fully God
Passover can begin
There is a pillow on each chair
during the first passover they were to stand with rod in hand prepared to run if necessary.
Only free people were allowed to recline at dinner. This is to show their current freed state.

Four Questions are Asked

Youngest Child is to ask four questions
Sum up What makes this night different
From all other nights?
Father retells the exodus account in brief
The Blood of the Lamb
Protected the death of the first Born Child
Christ is the First and only born of God
Christ the pass over lamb would die
In our place
The door to a relationship

The First of the Four Cups and the Bread

Four cups; however each person only had one cup from which they would follow the four cups
First is the cup of Sanctification
They would sanctify all that was to take place during this passover meal
The first cup of the Blood of the Lamb
Bread is taken from the middle slot of a bag broken in half.
One half is placed back in the middle slot of the bag
The other half is wrapped in a white linen and buried out of sight by the father
I will speak on this more later
Cooked with out leaven
Looked something like a cracker

The Meal- The story of Deliverance from Bondage

Symbols of the Passover
Next two go together
Carpus - Parsley- Young and growing Israel
Dipped into the salt water
Salt Water- double meaning
The tears of life from the bitterness of bondage
Life without redemption is full of tears
But God pulled them out of bondage and brought them through crossing of the Red Sea
They eat showing they now partake of life by the mercies of Almighty God
Drishdan - Bitter Herbs- Brings tears- The Bitterness of Bondage
Usually horseradish
Break off a piece of unleavened bread and dip it and get anywhere from a teaspoon to a tablespoon on the bread to ensure tears come to the eyes.
This is a graphic reminder of the tears their forefathers shed while they were in bondage in Egypt.
One of you is going to betray me
Everyone of them dipped into the sop
However, Jesus handed this bread with Sop to Judas and immediately satan entered into him.
CHa-ro-seth - Spice Mix- Mortar to make the Bricks
Sweet spices as their own bodies sweat and blood
Even the bitterness of tears were made sweet when we know our redemption drew near
Even the bitter things we face in the world can be sweetened by the hope we have in God’s redemption
Ha-zare-it - Bitter Root - can be onion, romaine lettuce, radish...
This is only symbolic of the bitter root of life
The bondage of slavery or a life without Jesus
Hag-dee-dah - Brown Egg- Babylonian Exile- Not truly part of Passover
Refers to the sacrifice made at the temple
Egg is pealed and sliced then dipped into the salt water to represent tears
This represents the sacrifice which was no longer because of the destruction of the temple.
Istar- Fertility god
Easter vs. First Fruits
Zwroh-ah - Shank Bone of a Lamb- Sacrifice for Passover
Only symbolic of the Lamb which died and the continued sacrifice made in the temple

Picture of our Deliverance from Bondage

Bitter herbs- Life before Christ
Galatians 5:1 NASB95
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
Bone of Lamb- Christ’s Sacrifice
Ephesians 5:2 NASB95
and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world
Parsley- Young and Fresh Christian
Dipped into the
Salt Water- Baptism
New life in Christ

The second cup- The cup of the Plagues

Finger dipped into the cup 10 times with a Drop spilt onto their plate, one for each plague

The Meal- Two Hours have Gone by

The time it takes to eat
at the end of the meal the father will say Go and search for the Alhf-ay-co-men or the buried piece of bread.

The Lord’s Supper begins

The Motz-zah-tah - three slot bag representing unity
Rabbi’s were not sure what it was to represent so they would say either the patriarchs Abraham, Issac, and Jacob or the Worship system Priest, Levite, and people. However, they cannot explain why the second piece is broken, buried from sight and brought back and broken and eaten
However, if they Father, Son, and Holy Spirit then it becomes clear why this is done.
The buried Bread is searched for and brought back into sight usually by the children with the promise of a reward such as a dollar.
Where we pick up with Christ in Matthew 26:26
Father breaks off a piece of this bread for everyone present and distributes it to them

Blessing of the Bread

What did He say,
Blessed art thou oh Lord our God, King of the universe who bringest Forth bread from the Earth

This is my Body, broken for you

If they bury this body it will come up again
Look at the bread
Unleaven – Without sin
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Flour – Beaten and Ground
Isaiah 53:5 NASB95
But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
Pierced – In order to cook
Zechariah 12:10 NASB95
“I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.
Grilled- Stripes- Strips are we healed
Isaiah 53:5 NKJV
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.

Then the Third Cup – The cup of Redemption

The cup Jesus is offering this cup Gave thanks
Blessed art thou oh Lord our God, King of the Universe, who bringeth Forth the fruit of the vine
Jesus is the True vine
We produce the fruit
Represents the New Covenant
Only one Old Testament passage references the New Covenant directly found in Jer. 31:31
Jeremiah 31:31–34 NASB95
“Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. “They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
This is fulfilled at that moment in their presence
