CONTEXT

Jesus has been betrayed by Judas with a rather elaborate or prolonged kiss and a whole cohort of Roman soldiers has arrested Him. Peter grabbing one of the two swords struck the High Priests slave Malchus and cut off his ear - other accounts mention that Jesus healed the slave’s ear. Jesus protects His disciples from the crowd and decries the illegitimacy of arresting Him in the dark but instead says this was done to fulfill Scripture. At this point His disciples fled and we were somewhat confused to learn that one of those who followed him only had a sheet on his body and in his fleeing he left it behind and ran away naked (Genesis 3:7).

TEXT ANALYSIS (v53-65)

Mark 14:53–65 |

I. The Kangaroo Court Assembles (v53-54)

53 Then they led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together. 54 And Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire.

Peter follows Jesus but not to the point of facing persecution

II. The Sanhedrin Incompetently Solicits for False Testimony (v55-59)

55 Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56 For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. 57 And some, standing up, were giving false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We ourselves heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this sanctuary made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’” 59 And not even in this way was their testimony consistent.

The Sanhedrin comprised of the religious leaders of Israel is seeking to indict and condemn Jesus but cannot do so because their false witnesses are as incompetent as they are and inconsistent too

III. Attested but Not Believed (v60-65)

60 And the high priest stood up in their midst and questioned Jesus, saying, “You answer nothing? What are these men testifying against You?” 61 But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him and said to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.” 63 And tearing his tunics, the high priest said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 “You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. 65 And some began to spit at Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in the face.

Christ tells the Sanhedrin that He is the Christ and states that they themselves will see Him coming in Power and in the clouds of Heaven (Glory cloud). He is subsequently charged with blasphemy and beaten. While His reference to prophecy and the future fulfilment is ignored the ones who were to know Him best demand another prophecy

What does this text say about God (Father, Son, Spirit)

v55 the Christ was blasphemed through false testimony - false statements about Him

v58 the Christ will allow His temple to be torn down and in three days rise again John 2:19–21“Jesus answered them, “Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this sanctuary, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking about the sanctuary of His body.”

v61 that the Christ is the Son of the Blessed One (i.e. the Father)

Isaiah 53:7“He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.”

v62 that the Christ is also the Son of Man

v62 that the Christ will sit at the right hand of the Power (i.e. the Father) with authority to judge

What does this text say about people (Believers/Unbelievers)

v54 Peter failed his trial and Jesus was victorious over His

v55 False Testimony Exodus 20:16 ““You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

v65 They hate Jesus and hit Him demanding something that they will never receive

v55-59 they are incompetent and inconsistent and they don’t pay very close attention to what God says

They are deceitful

First, no trial could be held at night.

Second, the verdict in a capital case could not be reached until the second day, and therefore trials could not be held on the eve of the Sabbath or a feast day.

Third, witnesses had to be warned to relate only true, firsthand testimony.

Fourth, those accused of blasphemy could be convicted only if they reviled the Divine Name.

Fifth, trials could not be held in the palace of the high priest.

Sixth, the Old Testament does not specify crucifixion as a punishment.

What is something that I need to do - who needs to be told
