Romans 3:21-28!! Church this took a lot of planning and rearranging on my part to make this happen
But how cool is it to be talking about Romans 3:23 the Sunday before Easter
This particular verse is the beginning of what is known as the Roman Road
And we know the Roman Road is the road to salvation
We know the Roman Road is a tool used to share the Gospel Message
What better way to go into Easter than with the beginning of the Roman Road
In just a few days we will begin our Easter Celebration Series if you will
And before we get to the celebrating we see Paul once again explain to the Jews in Rome about salvation
Romans 3:21–22 NASB95
21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
In you will recall earlier in chapter 3 Paul has just told them they are all guilty of sin
That the law does not save
For us today we understand it and it makes sense to us
But to the original audience it would have been shocking
Paul begins to share with the Jews in Rome about salvation
It should be noted that He didn’t start out explaining salvation
He starts out with explaining how you need a Savior
People I don’t believe will come to know Christ until they know and understand their need for The Savior
Enter Jesus to the conversation
That Jesus didn’t nullify the law
That Jesus coming did not do away with the law but rather He fulfilled the Law
We have seen in throughout scripture
The entire Old Testament points to Jesus
From what I could find after doing some looking
I see that over 300 prophecies that talk about Jesus in the Old Testament
In Doing Research
“A number of years ago, Peter W. Stoner and Robert C. Newman wrote a book entitled Science Speaks. The book was based on the science of probability and vouched for by the American Scientific Affiliation. It set out the odds of any one man in all of history fulfilling even only eight of the 60 major prophecies (and 270 ramifications) fulfilled by the life of Christ.
The probability that Jesus of Nazareth could have fulfilled even eight such prophecies would be only 1 in 1017. That's 1 in 100, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000.
Stoner claims that that many silver dollars would be enough to cover the face of the entire state of Texas two feet deep. Now I've been to Texas. I've driven for days to get across Texas. Texas is a very big state. Who in his right mind would suppose that a blindfolded man, heading out of Dallas by foot in any direction, would be able, on his very first attempt, to pick up one specifically marked silver dollar out of 100, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000?”
From ChristianAnswers.net
Paul is saying that Righteousness only comes through Jesus And not through the law
I know that is something we have heard over and over it would seem like but I think sometimes we need to hear it over and over to get it
Paul addresses 2 things here that would have shocked the Jews in Rome
The first is the Law doesn’t save and that Jesus Saves
Remember Righteousness stepped out of glory and stepped into humanity
It is not that we don’t have a high priest who doesn’t know what it is like to walk a mile in our shoes
Jesus st glory aside and came down into the world so that we could say that we have a God who knows what it is like
Then Paul addresses that salvation is to everyone
That Jesus came to to die for everyone
Salvation is to those who have faith and believe in Jesus Christ
Ephesians 2:8 NASB95
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
By Gods grace we have been saved through faith in Christ
Let me make this clear it is only through placing our faith in Christ that you are saved
It is for everyone
It is not the law that only the Jews had
It is through faith that we are saved
And there is no distinction on who can be saved
Because if you remember the Jews thought they were the only ones who can be saved because they were
Paul is saying that the Gentiles can be saved
Praise the Lord that Jesus came and died for everyone
John 3:16 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
God the Father loved the World so much
Remember He created it
That God sent His only Son Jesus to the cross to die in your place and in my place
That is an amazing kind of love
See Jesus paid our debt of sin and salvation comes when we believe in Him
So Paul essential wraps up Romans 3 with this one verse
Romans 3:23 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
This is very small simple verse we understand a few things
First we all have sinned and we are all guilty of sin
Paul is working to get the Jews in Rome to understand this
Remember they received the law first and believed since they had they law they could make themselves righteous through the law
But if you will recall the purpose of the law was not to make one righteous but to make one take notice of their own personal need of a Savior
Secondly we realize the God has a standard
Do you understand that God’s standard is perfection
I know most of you and let me tell you, you aren’t perfect
Most of you know me, and I will tell you that I am not perfect
We must understand that we cannot reach this standard of perfection without Christ
It is important that you first understand your own personal sin and you cannot reach Gods standard
Some of you this morning we disregard your own personal sin and begin to argue that it is not fair that God set His own standard and that He set it so high
Well it is not about being fair but rather God is just
If you were God you could set the standard where you wanted
It should also be noted that God cannot and will not be a part of sin
We are to be holy and set apart because God is holy
See how this one little verse sets us on the Road to salvation
Romans 3:24–26 NASB95
24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
It would almost seem like this is the meat of the sermon and everyone else was the intro
And right that just makes sense in light of these verses
We have been justified by the grace of God
That it was Jesus who redeemed us
To be justified, is that God looks on us after we have faith in Jesus as if we have never sinned
Just As If I’d Never Sinned
But what a minute because Paul just spent the majority of the chapter telling the Jews in Rome they were sinners
And you mean to tell me that because of Christ now I can be justified
That God looks on me as if I had never sinned
Church that is a gift that only come through the redemption of Christ
To be redeemed
compensate for the faults or bad aspects of (something).
gain or regain possession of (something) in exchange for payment.
To gain or regain possession of us we know that blood had to be shed
To know and understand that Jesus compensated for our faults and bad aspects
To put to bluntly That Jesus died in my place and paid my debt of sin
That it was Paul is talking about that it is through redemption which is Jesus
no one else can redeem you for salvation
That Jesus was publicly a propitiation
That Jesus appeased the wrath of God for sin
Are you starting to see how it all begin with understanding you are a sinner in need of a Savior
How Paul spent so much time and energy on the fact that you are a sinner to get to this point in the letter
That Salvation is only through faith in Christ who died and paid for your and my debt of sin
We like to say that sin put Jesus up on the cross but it was His love for us and His obedience that either put him there or kept Him there
Paul once again is using the Old Testament to get his point across to the Jews in Rome
They would have had a good understanding of the Passover Celebration
Remember the passover was the final plague during The Nation of Israel’s time in Egypt
Remember they were enslaved in Egypt and Moses came and said Let my People Go
Pharaoh said no and we get the 10 plagues
It was the last one we see the Passover
Remember the nation of Israel was to take a lamb who was perfect and kill it
Put the blood on the doorposts, they were to eat the goat, with unleavened bread, fully dressed with their sandals on
Exodus 12:12–13 NASB95
12 ‘For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord. 13 ‘The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
The Passover is a celebration of the Lord passing over His judgement
This has been fulfilled by Jesus as the lamb
Jesus was perfect in every way and died, His blood was spilled and now because of that
We have the opportunity to have salvation through Christ
Romans 3:27–28 NASB95
27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
It is through faith in Christ that we are saved
To believe and trust that Jesus is the Son of God and was raised from the dead
What a beautiful picture of Jesus that Paul is writing to the Jews in Rome and I also believe that it was written for us as well
To know that our boasting is not in the law but in Christ and Christ alone
To know that we are justified through faith in Christ and only faith in Christ
For us to dwell on the fact of who Jesus is and what He has done for me, especially coming into the Easter Season
CLOSING
So as we move to our time of invitation and response this morning
I would encourage as you have dwelt and heard this morning what Jesus has done for you
Maybe this morning is the first time for you to repent of your sin and trust and believe that Jesus is who He says He is
Or maybe this morning you need to spend sometime at the altar repenting or just time in prayer at the altar
Or maybe you are so moved this morning by hearing what Jesus has done for you this morning maybe you simply need to spend sometime praising God at the altar
The Altar is open
