Hear and obey what Jesus says because He is the Son of God.

Introduction: Friends, so far we have seen that Jesus teaches with an authority that no one else has because He is God. He has demonstrated the power of His Word by calming a storm. He incredibly provided food when it was impossible for the disciples to do so. All of these are true because He is God, the Christ Who would suffer, be rejected, die on the cross for our sins, and rise again.
Today, friends, we’re going to see Jesus do something incredible, that His disciples aren’t even aware of taking place until later.
Have you ever been surprised, friends? One time, I was walking upstairs in the house that my wife and I rented. I didn’t know it, but my wife had hidden in the hallway bathroom to try to surprise me. what do you think that she did? - She jumped out of the bathroom at me. I wasn’t even expecting it! If you think that’s funny, she got me again, and in both the same way and place!
Friends, watch what the disciples do when Jesus surprises them today.
Content and Explanation: Luke 9:28–35 “28 Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming. 30 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. 33 And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
Application: Hear and obey what Jesus says because He is the Son of God.
Identification of the sin/godly characteristic - Hearing and obeying God’s Word
Friends, what did God the Father say to Peter, James, and John when He spoke to them from the cloud?
Listen to Jesus.
What does it mean to listen to Jesus?
Friends, this is more than just hearing what Jesus has to say.
It’s also acting on what Jesus has to say in the way that He wants for us to act.
Modern Illustration of sin/godliness in our lives:
Friends, if I were to tell you, “you ought to listen to your teacher,” what does that phrase mean?
You need to obey what your teacher says - that’s right!
You know why you need to obey your teacher? - it’s because they have something important to share with you that you need to learn in order to develop into an adult who lives responsibly in this world.
Friends, we’ve already discussed that Jesus is the greatest teacher because He is God.
No one taught like Jesus!
But, friends, what are some things that Jesus taught that we need to obey and live out in our lives?
Luke 6:27 “27 “But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,”
Luke 7:22 “22 And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them.” (tell others about how Jesus transforms lives!)
But, friends, there were those who did not obey and live out what Jesus taught.
If you remember, we talked about the people who heard Jesus’ Words and got angry with Him because He pointed out their sin - they tried to kill Jesus as a result.
Friends, these people from Luke 4 help remind us that, on our own, we don’t want to obey and live what Jesus teaches.
Instead, friends, we want to sin because we’re sinners.
We’re sinners who deserve to live forever away from God’s presence in a terrible place called hell.
We’re sinners who don’t want to obey our parents all the time.
We’re sinners who don’t always want to do what our teacher says.
But, friends, as we were reminded today, Jesus came and lived perfectly, died for our sins sacrificially, and rose again victoriously so that we can have our sins forgiven, be made God’s children, and have God’s Holy Spirit to help us obey and live Jesus’ teachings.
Friends, we want this for you.
And if you want it to, ___________ will be available to tell you more about what it means to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as your only Savior from your sins.
