Today we going though the 9th word in the decalog.
Remember when does God give the Israelites the words, before or after they are redeemed?
This is crucial
Same for us
9th word is something we all have broken and many of us have broken and can remember a time we have broken it and look back and praise God that He forgives us and that others have forgiven us in our moment of weakness.
This word is word that 9 out of 10 of us break the larger category of the word and if you watch news doesn’t matter what news that we witness as close to a 100% breaking of this happen not on a weekly basis but daily basis.
What is the 9th word?
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
What does that mean? False witness? It means to not spread a false report.
I shall not come up to you and falsely say
Did you hear what Andrew has been doing lately? He has been coming to church after everyone is gone throwing parties with alcholo and stealing food out of the refrigerator.
Or I spread a false report about Jeff and his business and say do no hire him to do your landscaping because he does shoddy work
Why should I not say these things? besides it is a lie?
False reports bring destruction
Andrew’s reputation is hurt….when he would get up to preach
Jeff’s business and financies are messed up
God says to us do not spread false reports
Look how big of deal this is to the Lord
“A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established.
If a malicious witness arises to accuse a person of wrongdoing,
then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the Lord, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days.
The judges shall inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely,
then you shall do to him as he had meant to do to his brother. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
And the rest shall hear and fear, and shall never again commit any such evil among you.
Your eye shall not pity. It shall be life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
Whoa!
God hates those who bear false witness
Anybody testify falsely about them?
Yes, how does it feel? How does it feel if you cannot prove them wrong in the moment
There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
There is a greater category that false witness falls into….false witness is in a category that 9 out of 10 people break weekly
What category does false witness fall into?
False witness is not something we commit on a daily basis….but when we do it is
Lying
A lying tongue….
anybody in this room lie before? 9 out of 10 people do it
What other types of lies are there?
Bold face lie….cop pulls you over….why do you think I pulled you over….I don’t know
Half truths or twisted truth (someone says to you did you clean your room and you say yes because you cleaned your room part of your room….so techincally
Lie of exaggeration….pastors how many people at your church….how much is in your bank account….50% people lie on their resume….I come from this family….I do these things
Why shouldn’t we lie?
It brings destruction…hurts someone else…anybody been hurt by someones lie??
Hurts you because it breaks trust
The question to us many of us know lieing is bad and yet we do it
WHY?
1. Insecurity
We believe if people knew the truth they wouldn’t like us
If they knew we messed up or our verbal resume is not as strong as we believe it should be then people will not like me.
2. To get something
if we lie could get a greater reputation….I lied my freshman year of high school by lying how fast I was. The problem is eventually you have to run to prove if you are telling the truth
We lie at work to get more money, a raise
Here is the problem
Your sins will find you out
Often to keep the lie you need to lie
Here is the good news
God loves you as you are not as you will be or want to be
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
God provides
THE TRUTH BRINGS LIFE
