With that all being said let’s jump into todays message.
If you are new to our church today, it would be helpful for you to know that we practice a form of preaching called “Expository Preaching”.
What that means, is we believe the Bible is best taught by taking books of the Bible and then breaking them down from beginning to end, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Our goal, to better understand not only what God’s Word says, but what it means in our lives today.
That being said, if you’re new to our church, we are currently walking through the NT book of Matthew.
And so if you haven’t been with us, I would encourage you to go online to YouTube or any Podcast service where you can watch or listen to messages leading up to today.
If you have your Bibles please turn with me to the Book of Matthew today’s Passage is Matthew 5:21–30
We ended last week with Jesus telling his Disciples.
Matthew 5:20 ESV
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
I read this week a great commentary on how to check out righteousness.
Jesus was saying that his listeners needed a different kind of righteousness altogether (love and obedience), not just a more intense version of the Pharisees’ righteousness (legal compliance)
Our righteousness must
(1) come from what God does in us, not what we can do by ourselves,
(2) be God-centered, not self-centered,
(3) be based on reverence for God, not approval from people, and
(4) go beyond keeping the law to loving God who gave the law.
I want to remind everyone that while ultimately we are headed towards the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus. I feel like we must first watch how He lived so we can understand the Heart of our Father in Heaven.
John 14:9 ESV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
From beginning to end the Bible is God revealing himself to man. Jesus came as God in the flesh to not only save us but to dimenstrate what is is to be a part of God’s Kingdom.
So now he is going to dial it up a notch as he shows us what it is to be a Kingdom Citizen.
Matthew 5:21–30 ESV
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Let’s begin to break this down verse by verse.
Matthew 5:21 ESV
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’
As the perfect interpreter of the Torah, Jesus is now beginning to address the moral issues that humanity is facing.
Again he is not coming to Abolish the Torah it is the Word of God.
He is giving a practical application as to how to live the Torah out.
Jesus is giving what is called a Halakhah/or the way to walk.
by Saying you have heard it said........Mishnah

the classical rabbis developed a concept called the “fence around the Torah” (seyag la-Torah) that was to protect the perimeter of the commandments. “Moses received Torah from Sinai and handed it on to Joshua, and Joshua to the Elders, and the Elders to the Prophets, and the Prophets handed it on to the men of the Great Assembly. They said three things: Be deliberate in judgment, raise many disciples, and make a hedge around the Torah” (Pirke Avot 1:1).

Matthew 5:22 ESV
22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Sanhedrian for calling a fool.
Gehenna or Valley of Hennon
Burning pit of trash
Matthew 5:23–24 ESV
23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Sacrifice for atonement
You can not be atoned if you won’t offer atonement
Matthew 5:25–26 ESV
25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
Matthew Jesus Teaches About Anger / 5:21–26 / 52

In Jesus’ day, a person who couldn’t pay a debt would be thrown into prison until the last penny was paid. A “penny” was one of the smallest Roman coins, worth two-fifths of a cent. This shows that the debt had to be fully paid.

Matthew 5:7 ESV
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Matthew 5:27–30 ESV
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Matthew 5:6 ESV
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
