Introduction: Friends, so far we have considered that Jesus teaches with authority that no one else possesses because He is God. Therefore, we need to obey Him. Last week, we saw Jesus demonstrate that authority through stopping a sea storm. In the end, his disciples asked - who is this? And the only answer that we can come up with is that Jesus must be God to have that kind of power. Therefore, we trust Him.
Friends, have you ever been hungry? - I mean so hungry that you could eat a whole pizza by yourself? Friends, we’re going to see Jesus use His mighty power as God to do something today no one else could do … and it relates to hunger!
Content and Explanation: Luke 9:10–17 “10 When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. Taking them with Him, He withdrew by Himself to a city called Bethsaida.
Friends, the apostles have just returned from being rather busy.
According to Luke 9:1-2, Jesus commissioned them to proclaim the Gospel and cast out demons and heal people.
Friends, Jesus was working though His disciples to meet the needs of people.
The disciples were witnessing God’s power at work among them in changing people’s lives!
Importantly, friends, the disciples were obeying Jesus’ Words.
Friends, as we have considered, Jesus teaches with the greatest authority because He is God.
Additionally, friends, we can trust Jesus’ Words because He demonstrated that, as God, He has the greatest authority, even over a sea storm.
It’s no wonder, friends, that the disciples obeyed Jesus here because they knew that He was God.
Notice, friends, that Jesus and His disciples go away/withdrew to a city called Bethsaida.
Friends, what do you think that it means to “go away”?
To get alone.
Why do you think that Jesus and His disciples might try to get alone from the crowds?
Because they were tired.
Yeah, that’s right - it’s very likely that because the disciples had such a busy day proclaiming the Gospel and being used of the Lord as the Lord was changing people’s lives that the disciples were tired.
Thinking about it almost makes me want to yawn (pretend to yawn and invite others to do the same).
However, friends, the rest for Jesus and His disciples is going to have to wait.
11 But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing.
Friends, were Jesus and His disciples alone for very long?
No!
Who followed Jesus and the disciples?
A crowd of people.
How many people do you think were included in the group? - Keep listening and we’ll find out soon!
Friends, how did Jesus respond to the group?
He welcomed them!
Friends, Jesus loves people so much that, even when He would be tired, He still welcomes people to Him!
Notice that Jesus continues to do what He told His disciples to do - preach the Gospel and demonstrate God’s power to change lives.
What a day that Jesus and His disciples have had in serving the Lord - but, friends, the day is far from over!
12 Now the day was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; for here we are in a desolate place.”
Friends, what do the disciples suggest to Jesus?
Send the crowds away to get something to eat.
Friends, Jesus welcomed these people to Him!
Do you think that Jesus is just going to send them away?
No!
Let’s watch what Jesus suggests next!
13 But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.”
Friends, Jesus suggests to the disciples that they give the crowd something to eat.
Friends, if the disciples suggested that Jesus send the crowd away to get something to eat, do you think that the disciples have something to eat for the crowd?
No!
In fact, how much food do the disciples have?
5 loaves and 2 fish.
That’s barely enough for 2 people, let alone the crowd that has gathered.
Why would Jesus do this? - let’s keep reading.
14 (For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, “Have them sit down to eat in groups of about fifty each.”
Friends, how many people had gathered to Jesus?
5,000 men!
We don’t know how many women and children were there!
There were a lot of people!
Have you ever had to feed that many people?
Friends, what does Jesus do?
He tells the disciples to have the people sit down in groups.
Let’s think about this friends.
The disciples barely have enough food for a few people.
There’s 5,000+ people who are hungry.
And Jesus tells them to sit down.
If you’re hungry and you sit down, what are you expecting?
A Meal!
They expect to stay a while and eat, even if it’s a little something.
But, friends, where is the food going to come from if they only have some bread and a few fish? - let’s keep reading.
15 They did so, and had them all sit down.
Friends, did you catch the significance of what has happened here?
Jesus tells His disciples to have the people sit down in groups of 50.
The disciples do what Jesus said.
What do we call it when someone does what someone else tells them to do?
Obey!
Friends, the disciples obeyed Jesus’ Word.
Even when they did not fully realize what Jesus was going to do with the very little food that they had!
Friends, why would the disciples obey Jesus’ Word that looks like they are preparing for a meal that they don’t have?
Because Jesus’ Word carries God’s authority.
Jesus is God, friends!
16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the people.
Friends, look at what Jesus did with the few pieces of food that the disciples had!
Jesus was able to provide food for everyone who was there!
And, friends, who was it that served the people the food?
The disciples!
Friends, the disciples didn’t expect that the few bits of food would be enough - and now they’re serving the people!
17 And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.”
Look, friends, at how the people are described in terms of how much they ate!
Friends, what does it mean to be satisfied?
They had enough food, they were full!
Friends, they started out with not having enough and now they had so much food that no one went away hungry and there was food to spare!
Application: Because Jesus is God, seek Him to help you do whatever He has called you to do.
Because Jesus is God, seek Him to help you do whatever He has called you to do, even when you’re tempted to rely on yourself.
Friends, why would Jesus tell the disciples to feed the people when the disciples clearly didn’t have enough to feed them?
Because Jesus wanted the disciples to understand that they are helpless without seeking Jesus’ help.
Friends, the disciples had no way of providing for those people on their own!
The only One Who could do such a thing would be God Himself.
Friends, often times when we need help we’re tempted just to try to do it ourselves.
If you have homework and your room needs cleaned and your parents ask for help in setting the table along with clearing it after dinner but your friends are outside and want to play with you.
What do you do when you have all of these things that are pulling you for your attention?
All of these, because you are a child and the Lord has called you to obey your parents, are things that you can face that the Lord wants you to be faithful in.
He does not want for you to do them in your own strength, because you might end up getting angry with your parents that they would ask you to miss out on playing with your friends or getting angry with your teacher for giving you so much homework that it would keep you from doing other things that you want to.
Friends, the only way that you’re going to be able to receive help from the Lord to do things that He’s given you to do is if the Lord Jesus Christ is your Savior from your sins.
Friends, Jesus lived perfectly, died sacrificially for our sins, and rose victoriously from the dead so that we can be forgiven of our sins and be made God’s child who will live with Him forever someday.
In a few moments, if you would like to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as your only Savior from your sins, you’ll have a chance to speak with _______ concerning that.
Scripture Memory - Luke 8:25b “They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?””
Explanation - Friends, remember, this is the question that the disciples asked themselves last week after witnessing Jesus completely stop the deadly storm they were caught up in.
Illustration - So friends, what’s the answer to their question? - Jesus is God, that’s right!
Admonition - Friends, let’s remember that the answer to this question is that Jesus is God and we can trust Him to help us do the things He’s given us to do.
Repetition - Luke 8:25b “They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?””
