Introduction
10,000 Sermon Illustrations (Chicken Lady)
When Christian Herter was governor of Massachusetts, back in the early 1900’s he was running hard for a second term in office. One day, after a busy morning chasing votes (and no lunch) he arrived at a church barbecue. It was late afternoon and Herter was famished. As Herter moved down the serving line, he held out his plate to the woman serving chicken. She put a piece on his plate and turned to the next person in line.
“Excuse me,” Governor Herter said, “do you mind if I have another piece of chicken?”
“Sorry,” the woman told him. “I’m supposed to give one piece of chicken to each person.”
“But I’m starved,” the governor said.
“Sorry,” the woman said again. “Only one to a customer.”
Governor Herter was a modest and unassuming man, but he decided that this time he would throw a little weight around.
“Do you know who I am?” he said. “I am the governor of this state.”
“Do you know who I am?” the woman said. “I’m the lady in charge of the chicken. Move along, mister.”
We sometimes try to act like we have authority. We might use it over our younger siblings, even those in school to underclassmen so forth. But when we compare ourself to someone potentially older, or you remove yourself from that situation it doesn’t matter. I can say that I have authority, but as soon as Bro John enters the picture, his authority outweighs mine. When I was at CFA I had authority, but as soon as my GM walked, what he said went.
When we compare the authority we think we have to the Father of the universe we figure out quick that we don’t have much at all. Today we will be seeing how the the Son of Man who is Jesus, has all authority.
John 5:19–29 “So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has grant…”

The main point of John. John 20:31 “but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Jesus is equal to the Father V. 19-23
Look back at verse 17 & 18 to help set the context and the flow.
The context is that Jesus has made a claim that He is The Son of God, Verse 17. He is showing exclusivity with the Father. What he is claiming is to be one with the Father. However the Jews took him as proclaiming to be another God. Rather an equal with the father through the Trinity.
Paul speaks of this in Philippians 2:5–7 “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
Jesus was fully God, but while he was on Earth he was in the likeness of men, he knows how we suffer, how we feel, so on. But in this portion we are focusing on the deity aspect of Jesus. Deity simply means God.
So, how is Jesus equal the Father let us look.
Exposition
Equal in his
Work 19-20
He defends his work on the Sabbath, look back a week ago when he healed a paralytic. Jesus defends himself with the statement of him being the Son with him only doing as the Father wills or allows him to do. V. 19. What Jesus is showing and teaching that the only way the Son can do as the Father does, they must be equal. This work equality stems from the same essence.
Trinity illustration of H2O
John 17:21 “that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.””
Since we know that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one essence they are equal and their is one God.
The equality of work boils down to how the Father loves the Son . V. 20.
We know this when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan.
Matthew 3:17 “and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.””
We also see in 2 Peter 1:17 “For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,””
The love of the Father, the same essence makes the work the Son does perfect and that he is God.
The Love here is not the normal Greek love Agape which means love of will and choice.
But the Father loves the Son through Phileo love, which is love that is a deep feeling, the warmth of affection that a Father feels for his son.
But he promises at the end of 20 he will do even greater works than healing a lame man, but the big work he will do is the next way of equality which is power.
Power 21
We see in the Old Testament raising from the dead. God the Father was the one physically raising them from the dead.
In 1 Kings 17:22 “And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived.”
Elijah was a mouthpiece per say of the Father
And Elisha 2 Kings 4:34–35 “Then he went up and lay on the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. And as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm. Then he got up again and walked once back and forth in the house, and went up and stretched himself upon him. The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.”
I want to key in for just a moment the tail end of verse 21
“Jesus gives life to whom he will”- Is jesus like Oprah?
How does Jesus determine who he gives life to? Is he a mean God who only allows some people. He is not a mean God in doing so but he is just and perfect judge.
Romans 4:13 “For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.”
Romans 4:16 “That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,”
Ephesians 2:8–9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
John 6:37 “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”
Judgement & Honor 22 & 23 - Take time to discuss that the we are to judge in the Holy and proper way. V.22
Jesus main mission was not to condemn the world but to save it.
John 3:18 “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”
However, in his his perfect will with the father of all who is perfect in his nature, he must be a just judge.
For the Honor, the Father is passing the reigns per se to the Son. Jesus here is teaching the Jews who had a misunderstanding
Illustration
A just judge must do something with a criminal. If the evidence proves they have committed murder, there is a video camera evidence, the fingerprints are his, he has the murder weapon at his house, all of the evidence points that he has committed the crime, the jury knows he committed the crime, and the judge knows he has committed the crime.
What is the verdict, THEY ARE GUILTY, they deserve punishment, but the judge allows them to go free. What would happen to the judge?
The point we can take away is that Jesus, the Father are just judges, The Father has to be due to his character.
Application
Since Jesus is equal with the Father in their work, power, Judgement. Jesus is the giver of life.
Jesus is the giver of life V.24
Exposition
The two contingencies of true obedience is hearing and obeying. That hearing and believing is what brings is to eternal life with Jesus.
Believes goes with 1 John 5:9–13 “If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Think about when your mom tells you clean your room. At what point do you become obedient?
In the same way with our Christian walk.
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Romans 5:8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Think of the passed from death to life
1 John 3:14 “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.”

During the late 1800s English evangelist Henry Moorhouse made several trips to America to preach. On one of these occasions, he was taking a walk through a poor section of the city when he noticed a small boy coming out of a store with a pitcher of milk. Just then, the boy slipped and fell, breaking the pitcher and spilling the milk all over the sidewalk. Moorhouse rushed to the youngster’s side and found him unhurt but terrified. “My mamma’ll whip me!” he cried. The preacher suggested that they try to put the pitcher back together, but the pieces of glass would not stay together. The boy kept crying. Finally Moorhouse picked up the youngster and carried him to a nearby store where the preacher purchased a new pitcher. Then he returned to the dairy store and had the pitcher washed and filled with milk. With that done, he carried both the boy and the pitcher home. Putting the youngster down on his front porch, Moorhouse handed him the pitcher and asked, “Now will your mama whip you?”
A wide smile spread upon his tear-stained face, “Aw, no sir, ‘cause it’s lot better pitcher than we had before.”
