When I Don’t Want to Love

Jonah 1 - Jonah gets the call, but runs in the opposite direction, and is swallowed by a fish

Jonah 3 - Jonah obeys. The People repent
Jonah 4:1–2 “1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 2 And he prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster.”

Why did Jonah not have compassion on Nineveh?

They were Gentile
They were specifically Israel’s enemy
It would have seemed unpatriotic

Samaritan Woman

Matthew 5:44 “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”
Patrick - kidnapped by Irish pirates and made a slave for 6 years
John 4:29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?””

Consider the love of God toward you

Luke 7:47 “Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.””

When I don’t Want to Believe

its easier not to; it’s impossible apart from grace

Ephesians 2:8–10 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Hebrews 11:3 “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”

i want to be normal - 1 Samuel 8

i don’t want to be the only one - Elijah

1 Kings 19:10 “He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.””
1 Kings 19:18 “Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.””

If I do, it won’t go well for me / it will cost me

It will cost you your pride - Jonah
It might cost you family and friends -
Matthew 10:34–36 “34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.”
Matthew 16:26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”
Consider the sacrifice of Jesus for you

When I Don’t Want to Obey

it is either a lack of love or faith (or both)
if we believed in the moment God is who He is, we would obey Jonah The Woman
if we saw how unloving disobedience was, we would choose love Jonah The Woman
we can ask God to change our wants Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
Thanks be to God He is faithful in spite of our failures
Meanwhile as we daily miss the mark, even in our times of un-wanting, our faithful and loving God is still reaching out to everyone, revealing himself, calling souls to Him in faith and love. No one is overlooked in this broadcast: “There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world…” - Psalm 19:3-4
