Intro

At the turn of the 19th century, Thomas Jefferson sat down, opened three bibles, and began cutting the bible and pages removing everything that he didnt believe or think was true. He then pasted his bible together to come to a whopping 46 pages.
Jefferson would write this to John Adams concerning his actions, “There will be found remaining the most sublime and benevolent code of morals which has ever been offered to man. I have performed this operation for my own use, by cutting verse by verse out of the printed book, and arranging the matter which is evidently his, and which is as easily distinguishable as diamonds in a dunghill.”
In 1985, a group of biblical critical scholars and laymen came together to form what they called the Jesus Seminar. They used color beads to determine the historicity and deeds of in the bible.
Red beads – indicated the voter believed Jesus did say the passage quoted, or something very much like the passage. (3 Points)
Pink beads – indicated the voter believed Jesus probably said something like the passage. (2 Points)
Grey beads – indicated the voter believed Jesus did not say the passage, but it contains Jesus' ideas. (1 Point)
Black beads – indicated the voter believed Jesus did not say the passage—it comes from later admirers or a different tradition. (0 Points)
They would go on to remove all miracles and all deeds they they seemed to farfetched. They would ultimately remove the resurrection
What do these to groups have in common? They both deny that God can do anything that he desire to do. They deny the inerrant, infallible, and sufficient word of God. They take their own ideas and they put themselves as the determiner of truth.
For the next four weeks we are going to be working through the book of Jonah. We could be like the jesus seminar or Thomas Jefferson, and take the book of Jonah as fiction or myth because we want to deny the miraculous.
Jesus himself confirms the miraculous events of Jonah in Matthew 12:38-42.
As we work through the book of Jonah, we will see themes of the Christian life. We who have been shown grace and mercy can sometimes fail to show that same grace and mercy to others.
We will see the beauty of Jesus. We have been shown grace and mercy in our salvation as we have disobeyed God’s commands.
This morning, I want us to see that even through Jonah’s disobedience and God’s wrath, God shows mercy toward those who acknowledge him as savior.
Jonah’s Disobedience (1:1-3)
The word of the Lord came to Jonah and he disobeyed.
Why
Hatred for Nineveh
He would rather them be destroyed rather than saved. (4:2)
fleeing from the Lord
Seen as going down and down.
God’s Wrath (1:4-16)
God of the heavens the creator brings wrath (1:9)
God’s Mercy (1:16-17)
Sailors tried to save themselves by rowing back to dry land
Finally realizing their inability they called out to the Lord. (1:14)
Jonah’s sacrifice for the salvation of the sailors
God appointed a fish to swallow Jonah so that his word would still go the those in Nineveh
Wicked sinners are shown mercy in Christ.
Most of us would say that in this text the wicked sinner is the Ninevites.
Jonah denied the word of the Lord
God showed compassion and mercy to the Pagan sailors. This would be shocking to the Isralite reader to hear. God saving the Ninevites and the Pagan Saliors. However, it shows the grace of our Lord, that he cares for all his creation.
Jesus is the better Jonah.
