Intro: This tension has to do with a shift in our perspective towards how God has uniquely designed each one of us and what He expects us to do with what He has given us.
Romans 12:5–8 “so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another. However, since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them properly: if prophecy, in proportion to one’s faith; if service, in the act of serving; or the one who teaches, in the act of teaching; or the one who exhorts, in the work of exhortation; the one who gives, with generosity; the one who is in leadership, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.”
1 Peter 4:10 “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the multifaceted grace of God.”
Nurture YOUR (spiritual) nature vs 6-8 Spiritual (what you need to do)
Re-quote part of the passage
This is development/stewardship
Maybe take a ball on stage, not a “natural” basketball player, tall, eye hand coordination, but skills developed to a particular idea
Work in your lane, stop comparing
Recognize your responsibility (why you need to do it)
Re-quote part of the passage
This is direction/motivation
Is there a tension between my choice in talent and my responsibility as a gift.
Rank vs responsibility, some seem more appealing, but if you are gifted in any of these you have a responsibility to the body to run in your lane
Talents for me, gifted for others peter 4,10
Grateful for God’s gifts (who it’s all for)
James 1:16–17 “Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers and sisters. Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”
received/gift/don’t deceive self
This is attitude
Prideful in talent, grateful in gift
God doesn’t do gag gifts
Sometimes you unwrap and think i don’t want this, i want what they have? Remember you unwrapped presents on stage
CALL TO ACTION
Paraphrase 1,2,5, His words not mine… The 1 given to the 10 and cast in to outer darkness.
Every single one of you has at least one gift, and you’re not allowed to sit on it. The body is counting on you to develop your gift and do your part. Our response to the gift we’ve been given determines How God will continue to bless us, use us, and work through us. We might all have different starting points, but we all have the same capacity to multiply what God has placed in our hands.
Do you need to develop?
Do you need to re-direct?
Do you need to return praise?
This might sound like a multiple choice question, but I think the answer to all 3 of these is yes. We can all continue to develop our gifts, think more of how we can invest our gifts for others, and humbly remember that all our work is for the king.
You can come this morning and offer your gifts and talents here on the altar.
You can come this morning and ask God who needs you to invest in their lives.
You can come this morning and return praise for all the good gifts both spiritually and physically He has poured on you.
Parking Lot:
Another before and after we consider was pointless to pointed. Philippians 3:12–14 “Not that I have already grasped it all or have already become perfect, but I press on if I may also take hold of that for which I was even taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I do not regard myself as having taken hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
