Introduction: Friends, last week we saw how important it is for us to obey God’s Word, even when it shows us that we’ve done wrong. Today, friends, we’re going to consider just how powerful are the Words of Jesus Christ. And, it’s going to come in an incredible way! But, first, how many of you have ever been on a boat before? - do you like boat rides? Today, we’re going to learn about an incredible boat ride that Jesus and His disciples took!
Content and Explanation: Luke 8:22–25 “22 Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out.
Friends, notice here that Jesus and His disciples are about to take a boat ride!
They’re sailing across a body of water known as the Sea of Galilee.
But notice, friends, Who does the Bible indicate is the One Who suggested this boat trip?
It’s Jesus!
And how do Jesus’ disciples respond to Him?
They launch out!
In other words, they did what Jesus said to do.
What do we call it when someone tells you to do something and you do it?
Obedience! - that’s right!
Remember, friends, we saw last week that Jesus is a teacher unlike any other because He is God; therefore we must obey what He teaches.
We see the disciples obeying what Jesus says here.
Let’s see what happens as Jesus and His disciples sail along.
23 But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger.
Notice, friends, Jesus is so tired from the day’s activities that He falls asleep.
But, friends, Jesus falls asleep just as something happened to the disciples as they’re sailing.
What does the Bible indicate happened to the disciples and the boat?
A windstorm came.
What did this windstorm do to the boat?
It caused it to almost be filled with water to sink.
Would you want to be in a boat in the middle of a storm?
I wouldn’t either.
And neither did the disciples.
Let’s see how Jesus’ disciples demonstrate that they too did not want to be in the storm!
24a They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”
Friends, when the disciples said that they were “perishing” what did they mean?
They thought that they were dying!
This was such a bad storm that the disciples did not think that they were going to make it.
You see friends, the disciples were without hope for their circumstances.
But, friends, Jesus was in the boat with them!
Look at what Jesus does next!
24b “And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm.”
Friends, to rebuke something means that you say, “Stop!”
When Jesus told the storm to stop, what happened?
It stopped!
Friends, when it’s raining outside and you want it to stop so that you can play, can you just go outside, tell the rain the stop and it does?
It doesn’t for me!
You know why?
Because neither of us is God.
But Jesus is God!
When He says something, it happens!
Look next friends at what Jesus says to His disciples.
25 And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?””
You see friends, Jesus identified that His disciples were so afraid of the storm that they were not fully trusting Jesus in that moment.
Notice, friends, this account ends with the disciples questioning about Who Jesus is.
The Holy Spirit wants us to ask the same question.
If the storm obeys Jesus, then He must be God.
If Jesus controls even something as powerful as the storm, then we can trust Him with controlling our lives.
Application: Because Jesus is God, we can confidently trust His Word.
Identification of the sin/godly characteristic - Lack of trust on the disciples’ part
Friends, do you remember how the disciples responded to the storm?
Yeah, they were afraid - the storm was really scary and they thought that they could die.
However, friends, remember, Jesus identified that the disciples were not trusting Jesus in that moment but only focusing on being scared.
Modern Illustration of sin/godliness in our lives: Afraid of the dark
Friends, Pastor Bill used to be afraid of the dark - so much that I had a nightlight in my room.
When I used to be afraid of the dark, I used to think that things that I saw were things that wanted to hurt me.
However, friends, during those times when I was afraid, I would forget that Jesus was with me, even in the dark.
Friends, if you have believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as your only Savior from your sins, He is with you through the Holy Spirit Who lives inside of you.
When you face circumstances that would tempt you to be afraid, you can trust Jesus Who is with you, leading you.
Friends,
Scripture Memory - Luke 4:22a “22 And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips;”
Explanation - Friends, in our time in God’s Word today, Jesus told His disciples to cross the Sea of Galilee where they would encounter a storm.
The disciples obeyed but also became afraid because of the storm.
Yet, Jesus was the One leading them through the storm.
Friends, if you have believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as your only Savior from your sins, He is leading your life through the Holy Spirit inside of you.
This does not keep us from facing times that would prompt us to fear.
Actually, Jesus says that we will have trouble in this life.
But, friends, Jesus is leading you in those times and has the power to lead you through those times.
Illustration - Friends, no matter if you’re in a storm or it’s nighttime, Jesus is with you leading your life.
Admonition - Friends, not only must we obey Jesus because He is God but we can confidently obey God’s Word because He is God with all power over all things!
Repetition - Luke 4:22a “22 And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips;”
