Paul did not write to the letter to the Romans to correct or admonish them, although he had yet to visit them in person he has heard of their faith and was pleased, or satisfied about them, they were knowledgeable and were instructing others.

15

The letter was to introduce himself to them, give his qualification and to remind them of gospel truths that were delivered to him by personal instruction from Jesus himself.

16

Paul did give the gospel to the Jews in every city he visited but his primary ministry, charged to him from God was to the Gentiles. Acts 9:15 “But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.” Teaching them the truths of God so that they would be put forth as a acceptable and fragrant offering to God and sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

17-18

Paul does not boast in himself or in how many he has taught or saved, he gives all of the Glory to Christ and in Christ and through Christ’s accomplishments he can be and is proud of his works that he has done for God

19

In the early church age God granted to the Apostles and early leaders the ability to perform signs and wonders, through the Holy Spirit, to display and show the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now that the Church has been established and the cannon of scripture recorded those abilities granted to the Apostles and others have ceased as we now have the living word of the completed Bible as our source of all gospel truths. Illyricum is the area that now northern Albania and from Jerusalem to Illyricum covers around 1,400 miles. Everywhere Paul has gone, from Jerusalem to Illyricum he has done the duty that Christ tasked him with, spreading the gospel of Christ.

20

Paul was not keen on covering ground that others have already visited, his ambition was to visit places that have not heard the good news yet, he wanted to go out and to the unknowledged and not to spread the gospel seed in fields that had already been planted.

21

Paul uses a quote from Isaiah 52:15 Which is referring to Christ’s second coming but he uses it in a broader sense of his evangelism and the evangelism that will continue until Christ returns. Isaiah 52:15 “so shall he sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths because of him, for that which has not been told them they see, and that which they have not heard they understand.”

22

Paul had long desired to come to Rome to meet and fellowship with the Roman Christians, to further their knowledge and strengthen their faith, but his primary duty was to spread the gospel far and wide and God had not pur the trip to Rome in his path yet.

23

But now by the grace of God the gospel had been spread, by him and the other Apostles, from Jerusalem to Albania and Paul’s purpose is not to go where the gospel has already been planted but to minister to those who have not yet been given the good news.

24

This is why even though Paul wants to visit Rome and the Roman church it is not to stay for long and plant other churches there. It is to visit them for a short time, encourage them and to prepare for his next journey to the un-planted fields in Spain. As we talked about in chapter one Paul wished to use Rome as a remote home base for his missionary journey to Spain and to gather, the Lord willing, the resources needed to carry out the continued spreading of the gospel of Christ. The bible does not explicitly state that Paul made it to the Spanish peninsula but there is some, credible and otherwise, extra biblical texts that say he did.

25

But before Paul could make the journey to Rome and plan his further travels to Spain he needed to travel back, in the opposite direction, to Jerusalem to bring aid to the Christians there. At the time Paul was writing Romans there was a famine in Jerusalem and on top of the famine there was a great persecution on the Christians from the non believing Jews. Along with the scarcity of food the Jews were putting believers in prison and causing them to lose their jobs making the ability for Christians to feed their families.
