Are You Causing Grief?

Text: Ephesians 4:21-32

Introduction

Recap from last week about the being the “temple of God” (REFERENCE PICTURE)
INNER COURT - A person’s psyche
OURTER COURT - A person’s body
The KEY POINT to remember about God’s presences within you is to show His life and character through you. In order for this to happen, you must follow Jesus’ teaching by exchanging your OLD PSYCHE for a NEW ONE (new way of thinking, feeling, reacting, emotions, etc.)
You have TWO CHOICES:
You can allow the HS to take all that He as accomplished on the inside of you and reveal it through your life… or
You can grieve/quench the HS. In other words hinder His full work through your life.
It simply comes down to WILLINGNESS!
Luke 14:26 “26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”

1) Who Are You Grieving?

A. God Himself
The Bible teaches God is triune in nature, yet one in being.
Father, Son and Spirit
God’s Spirit is different in operation while equal in essence.
I make this point for you to know you are grieving the very one who did all the work to provide salvation for your soul!

2) How Does One Grieve God?

A. Remember what the HS greatest desire is.
B. What about God’s all-powerful nature?
While God is all-powerful, He gives you the freedom to operate according to your NEW HEART or the OLD FLESH.
Crucify your flesh, not your hear.
C. Grieving the HS is within your control
Turn to: Ephesians 4:25-32.
In short, grieving God’s Spirit happens when you give place to the devil (TOO MUCH BAGGAGE)
Paul is emphasizing the huge impact your day-to-day has on the freedom one gives to God’s Spirit.
God is commanding your every emotion, feeling, action be shaped by Jesus’ love for you!
Reference the TEMPLE - It would be like sealing the entrance of the Temple
If this is happening in your life, you are retracting from doing the necessary work of exchanging your old life for the new life (psyche)

3) How To Resist Grieving The Spirit

Turn to: Nehemiah 4 (Refer back to graphic)
There was only one entrance into the exterior hidden chambers of Solomon’s Temple. There was one entrance on the front side on either side of the porch.

A. Remember who’s God’s enemy

Jesus said, “The world actually hates Me.”
Satan has already been declared defeated!
In order for Satan to take his anger out on God, he is looking for ways to hinder you.
a. Satan uses lies and discouragement (verse 2)
“feeble Jews”
This was a label driven from ignorance of who their God was.
“sacrifice” = worship
Do they honestly think they will worship God they way they desire to?
Pursing a life of worshiping God is a present day and eternal investment.
“Fortify = build; put in order
Make an end = accomplishment
Do they honestly think when the end of the day comes, they will look back and say, “This was a great accomplishment and worth our time?”
The enemy wants you to think that you are wasting your time and have very little to show for you efforts.
Building wall and especially restoring lives requires a large investment of time. However, that time is made up of single steps.
Heaps and rubbish = the enemy has been allowed to crumble the wall
It takes no effort to look at the rubble and say, “I am too far gone to renew my life at this point.”
It takes no effort to simply “walk away and create your own life.”

B. Steps to building your new life wall

a. Pray for a renewed perspective (verses 4-6)
The people had a mind to work.
Notice verse 9
b. (verses 14-17) You have great reasons to build!
c. Pick up the trowel and the sword and start building!
One stone at a time.
d. Work together and protect each other
Verse 17, 20
This is why we are all in this thing together!
The more we all emphasis this in our own lives, the more fortified we become together.
