Galatians 2:1-10 On the same team?
Paul is still explaining why, the Galatians can trust his teaching. The gospel of Jesus Christ. – Recap intro the gospel, God and Jesus. Made a way. Why are you deserting God? People that teach another gospel should be cursed. Paul only seeks Gods approval not man. Paul taught by Jesus, all have to have the Holy Spirt reveal Jesus to them. In the passage now Paul is explain why His and his team can be trusted. The preach the same Christ and by the same power as the disciples in Jerusalem.
Verse 1. Paul after 14 years, Paul goes to Jerusalem with Barabas and Titus, and meets with the church there. (Acts 11:29? Acts 15) Much debate what visit this is. You can have fun with that, we will look at what Paul is wanting to explain to the Galatians.
On the same team? Verse 2.Paul goes because he had a revelation from God to do so, he is going go make sure that he was and had not running in vain, It Paul a runner? No, probery not, Paul is talking about all the ministry he had done, his life serving Jesus, Paul was going to make sure that he is teaching the same gospel as the other apostles. (But likely he is because of Barabas). This is not an open debate but a private meeting to ensure that Paul’s team it on the same teams as the apostles.
It shows the Galatians that Paul is not a rouge cult leader that makes up his own religion, from a revelation of Jesus Christ and him teaching Paul. Because Paul at this time he goes to make sure that he had not missed anything or got something wrong, he is getting the approval of the leaders. And can write the Galatians, with authority and backing of the true apostles. (Not the ones that are false brothers that are disturbing the Galatians).
A false gospel of “I make up my own rules, - or I don’t need other believers, it is only God and me”. I had a special revelation, and God made me leader, no accountability hmmm… Don’t trust or follow any person like that, just as Paul wrote earlier in Galatians, feel very free to ignore people that teach another gospel. Or clearer may they be cursed. Doomed to destruction. No, in the story of the early church, that is not what we see, there is an exptication to live like Jesus did, to serve as he did, to submit to his teaching. People are invited to a fellowship of people in Christ that live together for Jesus. In glad submission to God and one another. That is one of the reasons we join together as a church, for encouragement and worship, rebuke, accountability service and generosity. Following Jesus is not an individual sport, more like a team sport.
Verse 3. Opens the issue about circumcise (isem). Stating that the apostles did not require Titus to be circumcised, therefore it can’t be part of the teaching of the gospel, - Therefore it is clear it is a false teaching that gentiles must be circumcised to be a follower of Jesus. (Jesus + something, that is part of the old covenant, is not the gospel). Jesus is the gospel. Adding to Jesus is leaving God… You are not on the team if you do…
Verse 4. Like the false brothers, PPT they were not on the team. Because they were trying to influence the apostles to demand it (observing Jewish ceriomal law), there by bringing all the beliers in to slavery of it again, destroying the freedom found in Christ Jesus. – False Gospel of traditions and you have to be like us.
Verse 5. Paul and Barnabas do not submit to them, not even for a moment, - So they can preserve the truth of the gospel, to the Galatians. They defend the gospel so the Galatiens can live in the freedom Jesus Christ offers, the gentiles don’t have to be come Jews, to be come followers of Jesus.
Verse 6. The people that was infuncial did not add the gospel Paul had learned, - (Poor, rich, God shows no partiality, - do we? The false gospel of influence? If the church just had more influence or I did then God would work more? Really? Is God not able without fame to bring people to him? A strange view that the Holy Spirt works better when people have a big platform or influence, I think the Holy Spirt is stronger, and I don’t think God works better if we have more status and riches, proberly the oppsite if we look at church history, the people of God seem to grow in perccution, and shink in riches as the people of Isreal did in the promis land). It is not about the millions, it is about if we love the one person we meet. One on one, if we don’t it dose not matter how many millions we speak with…
Verse 7 Instead they approve of the work Paul and Barnabas has done, and that Paul was send to the none Jews. As Peter was to the Jews. (But Peter was also send to the roman… )
Verse 8 The same God, that worked in Peter was also working in Paul it is the same God, and Jesus Christ makes it possible. The same source not another teaching.
Verse 9. Right hand of koinonia with the leaders of the church, James, Cephas and John, they could see that God had given grace to Paul to go to the gentiles, and they to the Jews, We are on the same team by grace, by faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse 10 the gospel creates generosity, and wanting to help and serve. And The team was very willing to help the poor. (false Gospel of riches for you, prosperity gospel). It is not our good works that makes us followers of Jesus, it is Jesus work in us that makes us want to serve and give. The Gospel – end by invitation, to that.
