What do I believe God wants us to know? Adultery and lust bring destruction, purity brings life
Why? God wants life for us
What do I believe God wants us to do? Seek the Lord, set up boundaries, received grace
Why? It leads to life
ME/WE
Today we are in the seventh of the ten words. The bible never calls them the TEN COMMANDMENTS but the ten words…the greek way to say this is the the DECALOG
The seventh word could be a 4 weeks series all by itself because of the emphasis the scriptures puts around this Word.
BOTH THE LETTER AND HEART OF THE WORD
It is also a word that is sensitive (I know this peronsally) to many people and there a couple reasons why this is….I grew up in teh church that didn’t handle this very well…The t TRURTH got hyjacked by there approach, another way to say this your APPROACH has the ability to TRUMP your truth….I remember if hearing if you broke this WORD, the letter or heart of the word, you commited the worst sin….But let us not go to the other extreme and never talk about it because the scriptures talk a lot about this subject matter…Scripture calls it a gift from God.
2. Sensitive because of the shame wrapped around it.
Some of you have experienced shame from a pastor, friend, foe
Some of you from the enemy or flesh…they say partake in this sin, it is not a big deal, and the once you commit the sin, bam they bring the hammer…you are a Christian and you have done this…I can’t believe you
ANYONE???
Is this how Jesus responds to us in our sin?
Romans 2:4 ESV
Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
SHAME makes things works based…If I obey then I can have a relationship with God.
Along some of those line some people say we shouldn’t talk about this subject because s a personal and private matter, a personal subject….do not talk about it from the pulpit…who defines public and private….now I am not saying on this subject that everyone needs to know your business, but somebody else bysides God does.
Also, his will encourage you and can discourage you depending on how we are living…What’s that? Does your private life aways stay private? NO
What you sow in private will come out eventually maybe not in the same way.
Galatians 6:7–9 ESV
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
Let’s not deceive our selves in saying this is a private matter and it will always stay private….ANYONE DECEIVE THEMSEVELS?? NO ONE WILL NEVER KNOW?
You reap what you sow….this can be a very good thing.
3. It is not just a sensitive subject it is a struggle subject
90% of men struggle with the heart of this WORD on a month basis and 10% on a daily basis via mostly the internet
Woman it is 60% of via the internet
I want freedom for all of us
4. Because it is private and personal and accessible
Genesis 4:7 ESV
If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”
Number one place we see the enemy coming after marriages and singleness….The number one visited websites promote the breaking of this WORD…the number search thing on the internet.
The enemy know the destuction that happens when breaking this WORD, lives can fall apart, futures can fall apart, familiesmarriages can fall, faith
5. Saved by grace
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
He is 2 Cor 3:18
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
John Piper “Gutsy Guilt”
I will seek to be sensitive and yet truthful and graceful to a vitally important WORD for us today.
I think many of you many of you know the WORD I AM TALKING ABOUT
WHAT IS IT?
Exodus 20:14 ESV
“You shall not commit adultery.
What is adultery? Having a covenantal relationship with someone who is not your spouse.
It is the breaking the covenant of marriage you made with your spouse and having a relationship…I am going to break this covenant.
What God has joined together let’s keep together.
Matthew 19:4–9 ESV
He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
I know right now some people in person or online, might have broken this and what I want to say is wait to the end to hear the grace of Jesus.
Secondly for those of us who have not broken the LETTER of LAW let’s look at the heart of the law…before we get to all high and mighty….
Matthew 5:27–30 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
What is a lustful intent? TO STRONGLY DESIRE SOMEONE WHO BELONGS TO SOMEONE ELSE OR NOT TO YOU.
Oh come on I have heard from men, not in this room, praise God…what’s the big deal with looking and lusting….really it can’t be that bad
Yes, it is your objectify someone made in the image of God for your pleasure
You are objectifying God’s daughter or God’s son for your pleasure
JESUS SAYS THAT IS COMMITTING ADULTERY IN YOUR HEART.
NOT ONLY THAT YOU ARE SOWING TO THE FLESH WHICH REAPS DESTRUCTION.
WHAT I HAVE SEEN AND WITNESSED WITH THIS SIN IN MY OWN LIFE AND OTHERS IS THE SEEDS of lust eventually grow into bigger weeds of destruction.
I have seen and witness, families being wiped out by the lustful sin, faiths destroyed, futures destroyed, FAITH AND CONFIDENCE IN YOU
Many of us struggle our way to freedom
I have also seen the oppsite true to when Christians brothers and sisters take this WORD seriously. I have seen the life and joy that comes from heading and obeying this word.
Matthew 5:8 ESV
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
HOW DO WE GUARD AND PROTECT OUR LIVES AND FIGHT?
Guard our eyes
Job 31:1 ESV
“I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin?
Turn away, look away, put filters on your phone.
Sit by the water at the beach
2. Take every thought captive
2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
One pastor said so much of sin starts with a thought the we don’t take captive and it grows.
3. Seek God
Galatians 5:16–17 ESV
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
Psalm 119:9 ESV
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
4. James 5:16
James 5:16 ESV
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
5. Remember the grace of God
John 8:1–11 ESV
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
