[PRAYER]
[TS] Three ORACLES in Isaiah 8

Major Ideas

Oracle #1: Judgment is Coming on Judah (8:1-8)

[EXP] Birth Announcement <1-4>

Isaiah 8:1–4 NASB95
1 Then the Lord said to me, “Take for yourself a large tablet and write on it in ordinary letters: Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey. 2 “And I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.” 3 So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz; 4 for before the boy knows how to cry out ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”
Maher-shalal-hash-baz “Quick-pickings, easy-prey”

[EXP] Flood Warning <5-8>

Isaiah 8:5–8 NASB95
5 Again the Lord spoke to me further, saying, 6 “Inasmuch as these people have rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah And rejoice in Rezin and the son of Remaliah; 7 “Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the strong and abundant waters of the Euphrates, Even the king of Assyria and all his glory; And it will rise up over all its channels and go over all its banks. 8 “Then it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through, It will reach even to the neck; And the spread of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:3
[APP] If God is really with us, we ought to trust in Him; and unless it is the Lord we are trusting in, the thing we are trusting to save us will consume us and then destroy us.

Oracle #2: Judgment is Coming on Judah, but God will not make a complete end of His people—a remnant shall survive (8:9-10)

Isaiah 8:9–10 NASB95
9 “Be broken, O peoples, and be shattered; And give ear, all remote places of the earth. Gird yourselves, yet be shattered; Gird yourselves, yet be shattered. 10 “Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted; State a proposal, but it will not stand, For God is with us.”
[EXP]
Yes = Maher-shalal-hash-baz “Quick-pickings, easy-prey.”
But = Shear-jashub “a remnant shall return”
[APP] We must make sure that we are apart of that faithful remnant, the faithful remnant that will be delivered.
[ILLUS] Let’s say we go on a cruise in Mobile Bay and the boat begins to sink.
One response: “I can’t believe this boat is sinking. It’s so terrible this boat is sinking. I knew this captain was going to sink. Can you believe this captain is sinking us?”
Another response: “I’m going to put on my life-jacket.”
Which do you think is a more effective response if you want to survive?

Oracle #3: But how shall the faithful live in the meantime—in the time between judgment and redemption? (8:11-9:1)

[EXP] Walk differently <8:11>
Isaiah 8:11 NASB95
11 For thus the Lord spoke to me with mighty power and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,
“the Lord spoke to me with mighty power
Ephesians 5:15-16
Ephesians 5:15–16 NASB95
15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
[EXP] Fear the Lord <8:12-15>
Isaiah 8:12–15 NASB95
12 “You are not to say, ‘It is a conspiracy!’ In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy, And you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it. 13 “It is the Lord of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, And He shall be your dread. 14 “Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 “Many will stumble over them, Then they will fall and be broken; They will even be snared and caught.”
Conspiracy - Isaiah 7:5-6
Isaiah 7:5–6 NASB95
5 ‘Because Aram, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has planned evil against you, saying, 6 “Let us go up against Judah and terrorize it, and make for ourselves a breach in its walls and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,”
Christ - 1 Peter 3:14-15
1 Peter 3:14–15 NASB95
14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, 15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
[EXP] Preserve the teaching <8:16>
Isaiah 8:16 NASB95
16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
[EXP] Wait for and seek the Lord <8:17-18>
Isaiah 8:17–18 NASB95
17 And I will wait for the Lord who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will even look eagerly for Him. 18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
Hebrews 2:11-15 says this is what Jesus is doing with us
Hebrews 2:11–15 NLT
11 So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. 12 For he said to God, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.” 13 He also said, “I will put my trust in him,” that is, “I and the children God has given me.” 14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.
[EXP] Look to God’s instructions and teachings <8:19-22>
Isaiah 8:19–22 NASB95
19 When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. 21 They will pass through the land hard-pressed and famished, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will be enraged and curse their king and their God as they face upward. 22 Then they will look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be driven away into darkness.
[EXP] Realize that Light is coming again <9:1>
Isaiah 9:1 NASB95
1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.
Matthew 4:12-17
Matthew 4:12–17 NASB95
12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: 15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles16 The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.” 17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
[APP] Judgment is coming for those who refuse to trust in Jesus, but redemption is coming to those who trust in Him.
In the meantime, we must live as the faithful remnant waiting for Christ to come again.
