Psalm 47:title–4 (NKJV)
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. 1 Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph! 2 For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth. 3 He will subdue the peoples under us, And the nations under our feet. 4 He will choose our inheritance for us, The excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah
Is this just nationalism? Or more of a regard for the promise that God gave them? No, because everyone is invited to praise! All the peoples! Lots of Gentiles going on in this chapter.
Psalm 47:5–9 (NKJV)
5 God has gone up with a shout, The Lord with the sound of a trumpet. 6 Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! 7 For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding. 8 God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne. 9 The princes of the people have gathered together, The people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted.
Now as an aside I think Paul may have used this as a reminder that our praise and worship of God is to be with understanding. It’s why we don’t just pray in tongues, etc. Paul says its better to know what you’re singing and praying. 1 Corinthians 14:15–19 “What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 19yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.” you cant even celebrate your own prayer or praise if you cant understand it. How can we be instructed if we cant “get it”? Listen and live!
When kings would be defeated they would often give their shields and swords to the new sovereign. God is champion over all the earth. Why? Because everyone who turns to God in faith is the people of the God, Abraham received the initial call and promise when?
Before circumcised. Before became Patriarch of Jews. Genesis 15:1–21

Psalm 48

Psalm 48:title–7 (NKJV)
A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. 1 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised In the city of our God, In His holy mountain. 2 Beautiful in elevation, The joy of the whole earth, Is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, The city of the great King. 3 God is in her palaces; He is known as her refuge. 4 For behold, the kings assembled, They passed by together. 5 They saw it, and so they marveled; They were troubled, they hastened away. 6 Fear took hold of them there, And pain, as of a woman in birth pangs, 7 As when You break the ships of Tarshish With an east wind.
The parade of kings, the reality of everything we really have no control over that the Lord commands. Who can say to the planet chill and it does? These guys were paroxysm when they realize what God can do. With this small nation on a hill in Israel.
God wants us to rejoice in Israel because He has done it, not them. We are zionists because God said to!
Psalm 48:8 NKJV
8 As we have heard, So we have seen In the city of the Lord of hosts, In the city of our God: God will establish it forever. Selah
So we have seen, Israel is incapable of doing all this on their own. Jesus has to do it. Please remember, its not Israel but God doing this.
Psalm 48:9–11 NKJV
9 We have thought, O God, on Your lovingkindness, In the midst of Your temple. 10 According to Your name, O God, So is Your praise to the ends of the earth; Your right hand is full of righteousness. 11 Let Mount Zion rejoice, Let the daughters of Judah be glad, Because of Your judgments.
Let Zion rejoice
Psalm 48:12–14 NKJV
12 Walk about Zion, And go all around her. Count her towers; 13 Mark well her bulwarks; Consider her palaces; That you may tell it to the generation following. 14 For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide Even to death.
This is God reminding again, Israel is successful as a nation because of the work God has done in them and will do them. Even if they (or we) are dead.

Psalm 49

Psalm 49:title–4 NKJV
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. 1 Hear this, all peoples; Give ear, all inhabitants of the world, 2 Both low and high, Rich and poor together. 3 My mouth shall speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding. 4 I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will disclose my dark saying on the harp.
get ready, because the dark (deep) comes for us all and this Psalm is to warn them all. This is being said with all teaching and thought.
Psalm 49:5–9 NKJV
5 Why should I fear in the days of evil, When the iniquity at my heels surrounds me? 6 Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the multitude of their riches, 7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him— 8 For the redemption of their souls is costly, And it shall cease forever— 9 That he should continue to live eternally, And not see the Pit.
We cannot pay for ourselves or others out of the grave much less Heaven/Eternity. Like Jesus said in Matthew 19:23 “Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
this also notes the idea of eternal life and eternal (second) death.
Psalm 49:10–12 NKJV
10 For he sees wise men die; Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish, And leave their wealth to others. 11 Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever, Their dwelling places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names. 12 Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not remain; He is like the beasts that perish.
We do in our world vaunt riches and great success. Anyone heard of Hershey? Morgan, Rockefeller. So many think their eternity in their fortune/name. But just like dogs, we die (physically)
don’t base you entirety of doctrine of the fact that like that dead dog on the side of the road, we will be as well. It doesnt mean you cease to exist. Its just death.
Psalm 49:13 NKJV
13 This is the way of those who are foolish, And of their posterity who approve their sayings. Selah
The sons state that this is stupid, thinking that you can be different. that you can do better than everyone else where God has to accept you.
Psalm 49:14–15 NKJV
14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; Death shall feed on them; The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; And their beauty shall be consumed in the grave, far from their dwelling. 15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, For He shall receive me. Selah
redeems my soul saved from death death - the rich and powerful wear the finest clothes, the finest hair, makeup, etc. You name it. But thats not what redeems. Its what we spoke of Abraham doing in Genesis 15:6 “And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.”
Psalm 49:16–20 NKJV
16 Do not be afraid when one becomes rich, When the glory of his house is increased; 17 For when he dies he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him. 18 Though while he lives he blesses himself (For men will praise you when you do well for yourself), 19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see light. 20 A man who is in honor, yet does not understand, Is like the beasts that perish.
One commentator said, “Do not be envious; do not grieve: it will do you no harm; it will do him no good. All he gets will be left behind; he can carry nothing with him. Even his glory must stay behind; he shall mingle with the common earth.” We dont fear the one who becomes rich, he has no sway over anyone.
v18 was all about himself. People say that they want to help others but really, the great majority is spent on themselves.
v19 - into darkness where there is weeping, gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:47–50 ““Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, 48which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. 49So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.””
v20 if all you live for is the now, you are no diff than a dog. A righteous man thinks about eternity. About the reality of this is not all there is.
Luke 12:16–21 “Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ 21“So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.””
