Mark 12:38-44: The Superiority of the Son

Sermon in a sentence: Jesus’ superiority requires our obedience.

The Superior Son (vs. 35-37)

Jesus is not questioning his lineage from David, but he was asking about his rank to David. (2 Sam 7)
We have to recognize the theological truths that Jesus upholds by asking this question.
He recognizes the canonicity of the Psalms (and the Tenakh in general).
He recognizes the role of the Holy Spirit and the prophetic act of scripture. (2 Peter 1:21)
2 Peter 1:21 ESV
21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
He recognizes the scriptures must be harmonized and cannot be broken. (John 10:35)
Jesus is the perfect fulfilment of the David prophetic promise of a future son and sovereign.
Since Jesus is the sovereign king of the universe (lord of lords, king of kings) we should submit our allegiance to him (Kiss the Son Psalm 2)

Superior to the Scribes (vs. 38-40)

Jesus constantly rebukes the hypocrisy of the religious leaders of the day.
Remember, Jesus is so angry with these actions that he cleanses the temple.
We must be very careful to watch out for our own hypocrisy or selfishness.

Not only does Jesus know more than the scribes and religious leaders, he is the only one willing to serve the weak and hurting (Mark 10:45, Good Samaritan Luke 15).
Our knowledge and love of God must lead us to love others.

The Superior Sacrifice (vs. 41-44)

This widow’s sacrifice very little compared to others, but it was all she had.
I want to be careful, just because someone may be able to afford giving that doesn’t make it easy to give.
We should ask ourselves , “How are we giving all that we have to the Lord?” (Financially, physically, mentally, spiritually, affectionately)
This woman demonstrated her faith in God by her act of obedience.
Jesus, as the Son of God, demonstrated perfect obedience by offering the only perfect and lasting sacrifice.
