Intro

This is week 5 of our series in our series called Drip
This series is all about the uniforms that people wear, and the reason why we wear them
We talked about the clothing athletes wear, and why they wear them
We talked about how a bank robber wears certain clothing
We also talked about the different shoes that people wear
Today I want to look at a different piece of clothing, one of my personal favorites, the hat
When it’s cold people will wear thick toboggans on their head to keep them warm
Athletes wear helmets to protect their head,
If they are baseball players it’s to protect from getting hit with a fastball
If it’s football it’s so that when they are tackled their head is protected
You even see people on a construction site wearing a hard hat, meant to protect their head in case something falls and hits them in the head
The reason helmets and hats are so important is they protect the head
Though this may seem obvious, if the head is destroyed, you no longer exist
That’s why Paul tells us to put on our helmet when we are fighting in the war

The War

Ephesians 6:12–13 NET
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.13 For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand.
Paul tells us that we are in a war
He makes that very clear. And the enemy isn’t people, but it’s Satan
He is orchestrating everything trying to pull us away from God
Trying to keep us in sin, and keeping us away from helping others
Listen to how Peter describes him
1 Peter 5:8–9 NET
8 Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering.
He’s a roaring lion seeking to devour us
So to protect against Satan and this war, Paul tells us to put on the armor
We’ve already talked about how we are to put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace from the Gospel, and the shield of faith
Today we are looking at the helmet of Salvation

Helmet of Salvation

Ephesians 6:17 NET
17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
As we’ve talked about Paul is looking at the Roman soldiers armor when describing the Christians armor
The helmet of the armor was the last piece that a soldier would put on, they often carried it with them, and would put it on when they were about to join in a battle
Now the Roman’s had the best helmet in the business
Some things they did that others didn’t
Covered the back of the neck as well as both sides, to not only protect the head, but also the neck
Many of the helmets had a visor attached to it, to shield their eyes and front of their face
They also often had a section that covered their cheeks
This helmet was designed to protect not just the top of the head, but the entire head/neck area of the soldier
Now the helmet of the soldier was meant to be the last line of defense - even with a fantastic helmet, no one welcomes a blow to the head
That brings us to the helmet that Paul is telling us to put on

What is “salvation”

The helmet is called the helmet of salvation
But what does that mean
Often in the Bible when we see/hear about salvation we equate it to being saved, trusting and surrendering to Jesus to save us from our sins
However, that’s not what Paul is telling us here
Paul is writing to Christians - people who have already surrendered to Jesus
Instead what Paul is saying with the Helmet is trusting that Jesus will save us from the attacks of Satan
He’ll save us in two ways

Present Day saving

The first way Jesus will save those who trust in Him is
Jesus will save immediately
2 Thessalonians 3:3 NET
3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.
Jesus if we believe in Him will protect us from Satan’s attacks today
The evil we face in the world
The problems of life
He can and will protect us from them
The sin that plagues all of life and is seeking to destroy us, Satan will protect us from
Satan attacks us by trying to lead us into temptation, by trying to get us to curse God
By trying to get us to believe that we are God
Yet Jesus came and is offering to save us from the sins of Satan
Jesus saves us from His attacks, much like a helmet will save us from a blow to the head
Now when it comes to sin, we should be fleeing sin, not putting our self in situations that will allow us to sin
But if we do, the helmet of salvation, will protect us from Satan seeking to lead us into sin, seeking to destroy us
I know what you’re thinking though
I am facing a situation that I cannot handle, and Jesus hasn’t delivered me
We got the cancer diagnosis, death in the family, divorced parents - and Jesus hasn’t saved me from it
That leads to our second thing the Helmet of Salvation does

Future deliverance

The second way that the helmet of salvation brings salvation is
Jesus will save eternally
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 NET
13 Now we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so also we believe that God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep as Christians.15 For we tell you this by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will surely not go ahead of those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be suddenly caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Jesus one day will deliver us from all evil and wickedness
Not only will the salvation of Jesus save us in the present day by helping us fight and flee our sin
But this salvation will also look like Jesus coming back and taking us out of this evil world
Away from all that is trying to take and kill our soul
Paul writes in 1 Thess. that Jesus will come back and take us up with Him
That we will no longer face the evil and wicked of this world
At that moment the war we are a part of will be over
The sin and evil we face will be destroyed
Jesus will take us to Himself and save us
The pain that we are facing, he will deliver us from it
He will save us
The Helmet we are told to put on is the belief and trust that Jesus can save us immediately, but that He will also save eternally
That He will rescue us out of this evil place

Conclusion

The Helmet of Salvation is important
It is our last line of defense against sin and Satan
It is what protects our head
This salvation is the belief that Jesus will save and deliver us
It’s the belief that no matter what circumstance you find yourself facing, Jesus can and will save you out of it
No matter how tragic
It is also believing that Jesus will come back and deliver us from all the evil and wickedness in this world
Save us from the sin and brokenness we face
We are called to put on the helmet of salvation, believing that Jesus has the power to save us, both now and future
We are called to put on the helmet because we are in a war
