Psalm 50:1-6 / Mark 9:2-13

3 Men, 3 Mountains

Moses - Mount Sinai - God reveals Himself in Law and in Gathering His People
Elijah - Mount Carmel - God shows Himself in truth and Might to unify His People
Jesus - Mount of Beatitudes - God reveals Himself in Authority, in Law, and in regathering His People

Why these men?

Moses - The Law
Elijah - The Prophets
Jesus - the culmination
John 1:45 “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.””

Peter & Tents

It was near the Feast of Booths / Tabernacles - stay and observe on this Mountain?
Peter was so amazed at the site it moved him to desire Shrines
Peter did not know what to say
Proverbs 17:27–28 “Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. 28 Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,”
Either way, God made clear it was about Christ Jesus:
Mark 9:7 “And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.””

What Must Come First

Elijah - Matthew 17:13 “Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.”
There is no rising from the dead, unless one is first dead
Understanding Peter’s Denial
Mark 8:31–33 “And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.””
Peter’s denial was very understandable
Preconceived Notions
Confirmation Bias
How can you conceive of God Dying?

What Does Resurrection Mean?

Redemption in that All that came before it had meaning and purpose, and is set right
Redemption in that the vicarious nature of Jesus; Atoning Death was declared sufficient by God
The reality and source for life after this one; we are gifted to share in the ongoing life of Christ when we are born again

Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore

Church Family, Let us gain understanding about the one story of redemption: Jesus came to live, die, and be raised to save us from our sins. Let us gain understanding of the necessity of the suffering and death of Jesus. Let us gain understanding of the glorious Resurrection of Christ Jesus; what it means about the truth of God; what it means for our own souls.
