What do I believe God wants us to do? Honor our fathers and mothers
Why? It leads to long days and life in the land
ME/WE
We are moving to one of the 10 words, 10 Commandments, and today we are shifting from the first four commands that primary have to do with our relationship with God to now the beginning of the next 6 that primarly have to do with our relationships with one another…and today we will be walking through the most foundational and fundenmental relationship we all have, and it is one that God has a huge heart for, and in the scriptures they have the law of firsts, that what is said first is often primary not always.
Not only that
- It is this Word that some of this room might think this doesn’t apply to me anymore, it once did, but now it doesn’t.
Young people often will say or believe they know better (I have been a younger person that has said I know better…and many of us will agree to it to)
3rd western culture at large is saying we don’t need this Word or it is bad to do this …not only that we do not need what is foundation of this Word
What Word am I talking about?
Honor your father and mother
Group #1 says maybe this doesn’t apply to me because their parents are not alive…but can we honor or dishonor our parents or our spiritual parents whether they are on this earth or not??
I will adress the two other groups latter
Exodus 20:12 ESV
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
Ephesians 6:1–4 ESV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
The question what does it mean to honor???
kavad: heavy, place weight upon, get value, respect
dishonor means to treat lightly
God says to us I want you all to HONOR, RESPECT, GIVE WEIGHT TO YOUR PARENTS
I also think it is good to know
Honor is a BIG DEAL to GOD…
WHO ARE WE CALLED TO HONOR? we are called to honor our parents, government leaders, pastors, spiritual fathers and mothers, elders, people.
I need to learn this a young youth pastor....I was not a great honoring of persons....
Honor, nor worship
First commandment with a promise…you may live long in the land
We know this who are older that those who HONOR their physcial parents and spiritual parents live longer....we will spell this out latter why this is
I asked my son Ben why this is in the Bible and he nailed it why it is good....#1 God said to do to #2 we will get to soon
ALSO, IT ALSO GOOD TO KNOW THIS IS OFTEN SATAN’S NUMBER PLACE THAT HE LIKES TO ATTACK IS THE FAMILY....MARRIAGES AND PARENT AND CHILDREN RELATIONSHIPS....because the enemy knows if he can break apart the family, the marriage he breaking apart part of our core that keeps us together.
WHY IS THIS IS SUCH A BIG DEAL????
Especially in our culture that pushes to not honor???
REBEL
BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONES THAT GOD INTRUSTS TO LEAD US TO THE LONG LIFE....GOD SAYS I HAVE A SYSTEM SET UP…MY SYSTEM I HAVE SET UP IS THAT GOD IS GOING TO LEAD US AND THEN WE HAVE OUR CLOSET HUMAN RELATOINSHIPS TO LEAD US OUR PARENTS
They are going to show you the right, rightous, way to live most of the timeSOME OF US ARE THINKING YOU DON’T KNOW MY PARENTS...are they going to be perfect....something that struck me this week God gave me this command
God knew our parents would be imperfect
But let us not do bad case law
What do I mean?
Lawyers will say base cases make for bad laws....You ever have the exception where your parent was wrong??? And we say “see! I was right!!!!”
Yes, we all have God knew we would but that doesn’t nulify the WORD
GOD’s SAYS TO US PARENTS IS YOUR ARE TO DO THIS…THIS IS THE SHEMA SOMETHING JEWISH PEOPLE RECITE TWICE A DAY.
Deuteronomy 6:4–9 ESV
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Prov 6 and other places repeat this
God says we are to teach them whenever and whenever it is not just for church or family devotions....I will say more is catch than taught…and more teaching happens outside of family devotion…a lot of discipleship, that is what we are doing with our children we are discipling them, the question is what are we discipling them to follow???
Ephesians 6:4 ESV
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Sometimes we as Fathers and Mothers need to walk away for a minute or longer before we respond....blow off some steam.
How do we HONOR them when we are young?
Ephesians 6:1 ESV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
If your parent says to clean your room....you don’t jump hollar and scream
If your parents says that what you are not doing is not godly don’t do it.
Honor them or try to honor them.
2. HONOR THEM with your WORDS
This is for all of us....We can honor or dishonor our physical or spiritual parents by our words
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Not everything we think needs to be said.
Words have power
James 3:5–12 ESV
So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
God is saying how can you praise God and then in the next breathe curse God???
Some of us need to pray this prayer of Psalm
Psalm 141:3 ESV
Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!
BUT I HAVE TO SAY IT, NO YOU DON’T
What if you have bad parents are a bad governmental authority?
Honor them because they are made in the image of God
James 3:9–10 ESV
With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
2. Position
1 Peter 2:17 ESV
Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
Honor your physical parents and spiritual parents
WHY?
1. Live long in the land, long life
2. Col 3:20
Colossians 3:20 ESV
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Table
Jesus honor His Father to the point of death on the cross
Jesus said not my will but yours
What about parents or people who are not the greatest???
We can honor the image of God
