**Jesus, in these beatitudes, is giving instruction for happiness, but it’s a happiness we must not confuse with the world’s understanding.*
A.
Solomon was a seeker of happiness.

210 /I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.
11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun./
2. You wouldn’t look for pears on an apple tree.
How many people are walking around with an empty bucket and a confused look on their face?

The kind of happiness Jesus is talking about is an inner peace, or state of mind that cannot be affected by exterior circumstances.

**“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”*
A. True blessedness begins with true saddness.
B. Psa.
126:5, /Those who sow in tears, shall reap in joy./
*TS]* Tonight we will just make a few observations about this Beattitude.
What kind of Mourning is Jesus talking about?

I. Mourning over discouragement and trajedy?
A. The heart of God goes out to those who have hurting hearts.
He is a compassionate God.
1. Mark 1:40-42
2. Luke 4:18-19, 7:11-17

1:3, /Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort./
B. God knows the difficulties of your life, and He can, somehow supply the comfort you need when you mourn.
/1. /1 Peter 5:7, /Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you./
C. Maybe you can look back on some pain in your life and now recall or identify the comfort you have received from God.
*TS]* I believe God is a God of compassion, but I also believe the major thrust of this statement by Jesus is spiritual in nature.
! II.
Jesus speaks primarily of those who mourn the loss of their innocence, their righteousness, their self-respect.
It is the sorrow of repentance.
A. A good example is found in the prophet Joel 2:12-13 and in James 4:8-10.

There is an obvious connection with “poor in spirit”
2. It is possible to know we are wrong, yet pretend we are right.
3. We justify, rationalize, and compare ourselves with others rather than the holiness of God.
B. Steps to mourning our sin:
1. See the holiness of God.
2. Process God’s scheme of redemption.
3. Take full responsibility for your part.

C. Sin will then cause us to mourn!
1. Lk 19 – Jesus mourned for Jerusalem.
2. Rom 9 – Paul mourned for his brethren.
*TS]* Comfort from God comes only through mourning, and thus the same with being blessed.

23, A Psalm for those who mourn, and are comforted.
It serves as a description of what it means to be blessed.
