Vv. 1-5: Faithfulness to the person of Jesus and astonishment!
Even though these women were adamant followers of Jesus, they did not expect Jesus to rise from the dead. They wanted to anoint His body. This was not for the purpose of embalming the body, since this was not a practice of the Jews. Anointing Jesus with spices was necessary to reduce the smell of the decomposing body in such a hot climate as Palestine’s.
This was more of an act of love and devotion.
In two ways,
The expense of the spices
and the desire to want to anoint.
V. 2:
“First day of the week”, is Sunday, which later became known as the christian day of worship in order to celebrate the resurrection.
V. 4 Divine Passive is a reverent way of indicating that God rolled back the stone.
V. 5: The young man Mark is referring to is an Angel. Angels would often times be pictured in God’s Word as wearing white robes.

12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes,
One of the task for these angels were to always reveal divine truth.
There were two angels from what Luke (24:4) says.

Hearing and seeing what the angels were telling them.
The importance of the women as witnesses. Mark shows that identifiable persons witnessed the crucifixion, the burial, and the empty tomb.

Mark affirms the identity of the one who was crucified and also affirms the identity of that same man who is resurrected in Jesus Christ from Nazareth.
It’s important to realize that in addition to Mark affirming who this was… Mark was also sure to include the 5 times in his letter in which the resurrection was prophesied.

31 Then he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise after three days.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
31 For he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise three days later.”
Mark 10:34 & Mark 14:28 as well!
Mark’s own belief in the resurrection and his proclamation of the gospel is unquestionable!
We see here in Mark a furtherance of him placing women at the forefront of eternity changing history.
The reason this is important to bring up is because of the strong evidence this give toward the person, death and resurrection of Jesus.
The women came to anoint the body, but the dead Jesus was no longer there. He had risen! The women were the first to be told and observe that truth. (So it is in all of the Gospels with details varying.
This was almost certainly because they alone had remained near the cross and had come to the tomb as soon as possible after the Sabbath.
Testimony of women was not accepted in Jewish courts.
Greco-Roman society also afforded them a lowly place.
The early church would have never invented this story!
With the importance of this announcement they would have never invented it to try and get people to believe them. No, this is a truthful historical account.
It falls right into God’s way of doing things. Using who the culture seems as insignificant to carry out His ultimate plan of redemption.
This was an announcement that changed everything!
25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
A dead Saviour cannot save anybody.
The resurrection from the dead is as much a part of the Gospel message as His sacrificial death on the cross.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
In fact, in the Book of Acts, the church gave witness primarily to the Resurrection!
22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”
2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
The resurrection from the dead was the primary point given in their witness. And rightfully so!
The resurrection proves that Jesus Christ is who and what He claimed to be. The very Son of God!
The resurrection from the dead is what enables God to for once and for all trample the hold of sin and death on all humanity.
The resurrection is what gives us the opportunity to be resurrected out of spiritual death and be made alive with Christ!
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
The resurrection changed everything!

V. 7: The disciples and Peter being sought out to give them re-assurance, forgiveness and restoration with Jesus.
John’s Gospel explains how this goes between Jesus and Peter. (John 21)
Just a reminder, Mark received some if not most of his gospel from Peter. Some think that this is really Peter’s gospel, written by Mark.
It seems that, he wanted us to know that no matter what we have done, God’s gracious hand of forgiveness can bring us back. Even in our darkest moments of despair, Jesus is there willing and ready to forgive.
Allow His fulfilled promises (Mark 14:27-28), give you confidence in your going and telling.
Although, seeing and hearing what these ladies have heard along with knowing the cultural implications of what they are about to try and do in telling, there is no wonder that these women at least for a little bit were afraid and told nobody.
After they had composed themselves, they did a lot of talking. (Matt. 28:8, Luke 24:9)
RESPOND TO THE GOSPEL
Repent and Believe the Good News!
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
GO AND TELL.
How will they hear, if there is nobody who tells them?
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
