It Starts With The Love of God

Introduction

Love Has Always Been a Hot Topic and Continues to be a Hot Topic
People are quick to deal in the lesser forms of love rather than the highest form of love.
People write songs about love
TV shows are about love
The media is always using love for its own gain
People are always talking about love
This is the month love as man has defined it.
The problem with man is his love is the love that is almost void of God.
The most commonly used forms of love in the intertestemental Period and when Jesus came onto the scene was phileo which is brotherly and emotional and eros which is physical attraction.
But real love is of God
Real love comes from God
God is Love and Love is of God
I’m careful not to say that Love is God
The reason being is that Love is Not Love because Love cannot stand on it’s own nor does it define itself.
God is love because He defines love, shown love, and personified love.
The love void of God focuses on self pleasure and self feelings.
The love of God focuses on loving God and loving people through the love of God from His Word
Jesus is the personification of God’s love and so Jesus defines love continuously when He comes onto the scene
We come to an instance here where Jesus is about to define love in a way that is foreign to God’s people at the time.
The group known as the Sadducees and Pharisees were void of the love God and were totally focused on the love of themselves.
Liars hate the truth and the high and mighty hate humility.
These groups of unauthorized leaders wanted to be the center of attention.
You will see in a moment how the Word of God puts God as the focus and not men.
The Sadducees and the Pharisees wanted to destroy Jesus and so they looked for ways to discredit Him so that their evil works could be justified.
Matthew 22:15 NKJV
Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk.
The Pharisees attempted to turn the government against Jesus as it pertains to local taxes.
Matthew 22:16 NKJV
And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men.
Matthew 22:17 NKJV
Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
The Sadducees then attempted to turn the Jews against him and discredit him as a teacher. They asked him about the afterlife knowing they didn’t believe in the afterlife.
Matthew 22:28 NKJV
Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
Matthew 22:29 NKJV
Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.
Matthew 22:30 NKJV
For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.
Matthew 22:31 NKJV
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,
Matthew 22:32 NKJV
‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
Matthew 22:33 NKJV
And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
And we see here again the Pharisees are going to attempt to get Him to call himself superior over Moses and turn the people against him.
Men are always plotting against the will and Word of God.
Psalm 2:2 NKJV
The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
Matthew 22:34 NKJV
But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.
This was their last shot.
Matthew 22:35 NKJV
Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying,
Lawyer or Law Expert: A scribe
They were theologians and teachers.
Matthew 22:36 NKJV
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”

Love God First

Matthew 22:37 NKJV
Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
Matthew 22:38 NKJV
This is the first and great commandment.
Deuteronomy 6:4 NKJV
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
Deuteronomy 6:5 NKJV
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

Love God First and THEN We Can Love One Another and Others

Jesus is giving an expanded depiction of what the family is going to look like.
Luke 8:20 NKJV
And it was told Him by some, who said, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You.”
Luke 8:21 NKJV
But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”
The Pharisees Asked Jesus For The Greatest Commandment and Jesus Gave Them The Greatest Commandments
Matthew 22:39 NKJV
And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
Leviticus 19:18 NKJV
You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

The Jews Understood Neighbors To Be Fellow Jews and Those Who Wanted to Live Among Them as Jews

Leviticus 19:34 NKJV
The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

Jesus Is Not Expanding This Saying As Much As He Is Expanding Who Can Be Their Neighbors

Their Minds Had To Be Converted On Who Could Be Their Neighbors

John 4:23 NKJV
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
Luke 10:25 NKJV
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
Luke 10:26 NKJV
He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?
Luke 10:27 NKJV
So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
Luke 10:28 NKJV
And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
Luke 10:29 NKJV
But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Luke 10:36 NKJV
So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”
Luke 10:37 NKJV
And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Be At Peace With All Men

Romans 12:18 NKJV
If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

Do Good To All Men

But Pay Attention: Especially To Those Who Are of the Household Of Faith

Illustration: I had a person in the church one time tell me if she had to choose between helping someone who was in need inside the church and outside the church she would have a hard time choosing! What? Let’s see what the Bible says.

Neighbor? There Is A Difference

Galatians 6:9–10 NKJV
And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Friendship With The World

James 4:4 NKJV
Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

This Was God’s Point From The Beginning

Matthew 22:40 NKJV
On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 7:12 NKJV
Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Romans 13:10 NKJV
Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Conclusion

Faith Comes By Hearing
Matthew 10:17 NKJV
But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues.
Believe
Acts 2:36 NKJV
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
Repent
Acts 2:37 NKJV
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
Acts 2:38 NKJV
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Confess
Romans 10:9 NKJV
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Be Baptized
Romans 6:3 NKJV
Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
Endure Until The End
Matthew 10:22 NKJV
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
