The Correct Response to Oppositions
Those who hate Jesus will try to accuse and discredit His testimony as Christ.
We have seen this in chapter 7 and we will see more of this in the next chapters and even more intense evil schemes that eventually led to the crucifixion of Jesus, all because they hate the holiness of Jesus. His teaching and His life are offensive to those who have evil hearts.
The preaching of the Gospel will always attract opposition. That is why many of the Apostles and Christians in the past died as martyrs (faithful witness) of the Gospel of Christ.
Even now, Teaching the truth of the Bible will offend people whose hearts are not right with God
The narrator tells us of this:
Jesus was doing his teaching Ministry (v1.)
The opposition (Scribes and Pharisees) came to test and find grounds to discredit Jesus (vv.2-6)
Jesus responded wisely (vv.7-8)
The opposition was ashamed (v.9)
Jesus taught the adulterous woman about grace and holiness (vv.10-11) Today, we will focus on how Jesus responded to the opposition.

3 Ways to Respond to oppositions Who Will Accuse and discredit our testimony as Christians, just like Jesus…

1. Jesus responded calmly – Respond calmly
2. Jesus responded by using the truth - Respond by using the truth
3. Jesus responded by showing grace and holiness - Respond by showing grace and holiness

I. Respond calmly and timely

John 8:3-8
The Issue – Follow the Law of Moses or not? a yes or no means people will be divided over Jesus. For the pharisees and the Scribes, it was the perfect trap!
Notice Jesus’s response:
Jesus was calm
Jesus took the time before he answered the questions.
Reflection:
How do I respond to people who are trying to discredit me?
Do I get angry and get back at the person?
Application:
a. Do not accuse back.
b. Do not be in a hurry to respond.
Proverbs 15:28 NLT
28 The heart of the godly thinks carefully before speaking; the mouth of the wicked overflows with evil words.
Proverbs 29:20 NLT
20 There is more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking.

II. Respond by using discernment and truth

John 8:7
Jesus used discernment and truth. He did not answer with a yer or no. He replied with a question, a question that allows the hearers to reflect on the status of their hearts - the truth of what is in their heart - sin!
Biblical Truths:
- All people are sinners (Romans 3:10, 23). As sinners, we are all deserving to receive just punishment from God.
- God is the ultimate Judge, not us!
2 Corinthians 5:10 (NLT)
10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.
James 2:10–11 (NLT)
10 For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws. 11For the same God who said, “You must not commit adultery,” also said, “You must not murder.” So if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have still broken the law.
The enemy will use deception. The enemy is the father of lies and deception.
Application:
A. Acquire discernment and truth – Read and study God’s Word – this is our weapon. Be ready in season and out of season.
B. Use discernment – ask the Lord for wisdom. If you don’t know the answer at the moment, don’t pretend.

III. Respond by showing grace and holiness

a. Jesus showed grace to the accusers.
b. Jesus showed grace to the adulterous woman.
c. Jesus taught the adulterous woman to walk in holiness.
