Jesus Divides People

Jesus will cause the DIVISION of people, not because he is a troublemaker but because his teachings are offensive to sinners and because His authority is threatening to those who are greedy in power.
There are 3 groups of people divided by their views about Jesus that we can find here in the passage and Jesus will respond to these groups of people accordingly:

I. Those who HATE Jesus (vv. 32, 44)

– Pharisees and Chief Priest – Jesus rebuked them but they did not repent.
example:
Satan hates Jesus.
Some people hate Jesus and Christians and they are willing to kill and destroy churches.
Reflection:
You may have hatred against Jesus in the past because you have not understood who He is.
You may have hatred towards God even now because you can’t understand why bad things are happening to you.
Application:
- Don’t hate those who hate Jesus because they are blinded by their sins.
- Show them the love of Christ and share with them the Gospel. Conquer evil with good.
Gospel:
Jesus is extending His invitation even to those who hate him and those who doubt him - John 7:37-39.

II. Those who are UNSURE of Jesus (vv.40-43, 46)

– some of the crowd and some of the officers
– they were divided, some were confused
– some were amazed
Reflection:
Do you have doubts about Jesus?
What would you gain by staying in doubt?
Application:
· Don’t stay in doubt!
· Pray and ask God to reveal to you the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

III. Those who BELIEVE in Jesus (vv.41, 50)

– Some of the crowd, Nicodemus – Jesus invited them and promised them salvation.
Reflection:
What do you need to see to believe?
Application:
- Nurture your faith by getting to know Jesus more and more (growth in Knowledge through His Word)
- Tell others about the goodness of God, especially those who are doubting.
Conclusion:
Jesus came to save people from their sins and he invited everyone to come to Him so that they might be saved. It is up to people to respond.
