God is A Way-Maker

2 Kings 6:24–7:2 (ESV)
24 Afterward Ben-hadad king of Syria mustered his entire army and went up and besieged Samaria. 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria, as they besieged it, until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove’s dung for five shekels of silver. 26 Now as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!” 27 And he said, “If the Lord will not help you, how shall I help you? From the threshing floor, or from the winepress?” 28 And the king asked her, “What is your trouble?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’ 29 So we boiled my son and ate him. And on the next day I said to her, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him.’ But she has hidden her son.” 30 When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes—now he was passing by on the wall—and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth beneath on his body— 31 and he said, “May God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today.” 32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Now the king had dispatched a man from his presence, but before the messenger arrived Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent to take off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold the door fast against him. Is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?” 33 And while he was still speaking with them, the messenger came down to him and said, “This trouble is from the Lord! Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?” 1 But Elisha said, “Hear the word of the Lord: thus says the Lord, Tomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.” 2 Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned said to the man of God, “If the Lord himself should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” But he said, “You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.”
God did not create you to live in desperation.
I really hate flying and for me that is perhaps a major moment of desperation. I seem to think of all the things that can go wrong, my mind wanders to the worse things that could happen and I feel helpless because I know there is nothing I can do because I have no control of the outcome or the event of flying.
Perhaps you too have moments that cause you to feel helpless and desperate. These are normal feelings and human feelings. It happens. The key is not to allow those moments to get the best of us. We must not be held hostage by these moments. Though flying is not my cup of tea, I still get on the plane. I face the agony of turbulence and the fear of being so high up in the air. Because I realize who has got the plane. You too have that choice in life to recognize that God is in control in all of life even when we face desperate situations.
Today’s lesson will help us to see that:
DT: When we are in desperate situations we can depend on God to supply what we need.
Transition: There are a few situations happening in this text that sheds light on God’s ability and a Way-Maker.
Samaria needed deliverance from the famine
A woman loses her son, needs food and answers
Elisha needs protection
None of these situation are too hard for God to handle. The first lesson we will learn from our passage is Don’t Give in to Irrationality.
Don’t Do the Irrational (vv.24-29)
This woman made a deal that cost her her son
She sought answers from the wrong authority
Application: God is able to help us through all our troubles. We have to seek Him for our deliverance. Take your troubles to God in prayer. Be patient with God. He is working it out you just have to wait sometimes.
Trust God’s Word (vv. 1-2)
“1 But Elisha said, “Hear the word of the Lord: thus says the Lord, Tomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.” 2 Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned said to the man of God, “If the Lord himself should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” But he said, “You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.””
The key here is that Elisha even as he faced danger and threats on his life he placed his hope in the Lord and what God said.
Application: You are not exempt from problematic people. You are not exempt from troubles. Stuff will happen. You must believe that God has not brought you this far to leave you.
You have been saying to yourself and others that you want to get closer to God. You have said you want to organize and structure your life so that you and God get closer. But you have not began. You have not asked yourself where do i start?
Questions like, what does God require of me? What do I have that God is asking for?
Here are some answers:
God requires your whole heart God requires your time.
Can God get 3.5 hours of your time per week out of 168? Can God get 5 minutes every morning? God is asking for your life
