Introduction

Now turn to Jonah 3:6-10 this evening. Jonah chapter 3 starting in verse 6. Its just a few pages forward.
As we investigate the golden thread
The beautiful reality that in every text of scripture, every one, we are pointed to Christ ether directly or indirectly.
He is the center of everything.
The scriptures tell us “For by him [that is Christ] all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” (1 Col 1:16, ESV)
The direct connect between Jonah is the Jonah bares the sign be which Christ was authenticated.
“An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.” (Mt 12:39–42, ESV)
Jesus said that Jonah’s experience was a sign for those that were watching.
Notice we have a mention of Nineveh. “The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it”
Nineveh, is contrasted to the people of Jesus day. Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah, and a greater then Jonah was the one preaching.
Nineveh is also rightly contrasted to Edom.
Both Edom and Nineveh were sent messengers “We have heard a report from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: … ” (Ob 1, ESV)
Both were wicked people.
Both were called to repent
One repented and one did not
Repentance will be the only claim to judgment
Let’s Read
Jonah 3:6–10 ESV
6 The word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, 8 but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.” 10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
May God Bless the reading of His Holy, Infallible, and Sufficient Word
Let’s Pray

Transition

What word reached the king. Repent, destruction is coming.
Look at verse 6.

Body

Leadership of the King

Jonah 3:6 ESV
6 The word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
Word reached the king and what is his response.
Did he say, no my city is unbreakable?
Remember that at the item of Jonah the Assyrians are one of the most dominate forces in the world.
Nineveh is an Assyrian city
This king had more power more security and more reason to reject the message than Edom did and yet he repents.
Who are you? What do you trust in?
Be the first to repent in your home, be the first to repents in your church, be the first to repent in your community.
‘Nineveh will rise up in judgement because they repented.
Last time we talk about the call God gives to Rise up! Rise up to what, call the world to repentance.
If we continued reading in the story we see that God rebukes Jonah for his own unrepentance while at the time time using him to bring about the the repentance of Nineveh.
Don’t say I know i am good because my ministry is successful.
Repent first

Transition

Then call others to repentance, lead them there.
See verses 7-9

Call Them to Repentance

Jonah 3:7–9 ESV
7 And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, 8 but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.”
This revival,
you cannot schedule it,
Plan, it. What you see the sign. Revival here today, RUN!
When God more not only the king but the nobles decree a fast.
The fast is not the amazing thing, people will do all sort of things.
St Peter’s basilica,
Indulgences and the reformation
You want to know where God is working? Look for people, turning from evil.
You must understand only God can do this We are called to preach repentance but just like the messengers to Edom it will fall on def hateful ears.
Understand the picture here, one day this city is committing atrosites, that is why Jonah did not want them to repent, the next they are calling themselves evil.
So get the picture a guy goes to preach that does not want to see conversion, he does not want he hears to repent, and then whole city repents.
Do you think it was Jonah’s cleverness, drive, preaching style? Do you think it was anything Jonah did,
no the Lord says, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” SEE (Exodus 33:19, Ro 9:15, ESV)
To Edom like Pharoh the Lord said I will harden you and to Nineveh he said I will have compassion and grant to you repentance. (Acts 11:18, 2 Timothy 2:25, ESV).

Transition

When God grants repentance is leads to his mercy. The scriptures "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” (Ps 51:17, ESV)
Yet no one can take credit for it was God who granted the “broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart”
For anything that night reply, how is that fair, God does not grant Edom repentance then then destroys them for not repenting?
To which I reply, please see Romans 9:19–24 and that's all I have to say on the subject.
For now we look at verse 10 in Jonah chapter 3.

Was God Surprised?

Jonah 3:10 ESV
10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
When God saw, was God suprised?
was God sitting in heaven saying well I did my part sending them Jonah. Now it’s on them, I hope they believe.
the action of God explained from a human perspective

Conclusion

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
The best thing you can do pastors, fathers, grandfathers, mothers, grandmothers, is lead your church, you families, to fear the lord pray that God will grant them all repentance.

Benediction

Numbers 6:24–26 ESV
24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
