John 3:31-36

Announcement
DNOW Weekend March 8th-10th
Super Bowl Party February 11th
Introduction.
Tonight is going to be very different. You are going to see that if you have been with us an extended amount of time, this is very similar to what i have preached on, at least twice. But John is showing the importance of Jesus being from Heaven, that He is God, and the ramifications of those who do not believe in Jesus. I am only going to teach or preach for 10 minutes, but then we are going to go into our small groups and ask questions and talk more specifically how does this look like in your life.
I have sent questions to your small group leaders, and they know to take their time through this. But lets look at our passage,
John 3:31–36 “He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

Context
John 20:30–31 “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Wrapping up a convrsation with Nicodemus and John the Baptist disciples.
Point 1- Jesus is Lord over all. 31-33.
Point to verse 32 he is not just saying those who do not accept hsi testimony is not as simple as they do not believe him, some do not, but alot do. This problem is seen in the alot of the American Church, where people are cultural Christians. What is that? Well here some examples.
Billy Graham who led major revival from the 50’s to the early 2000’s when he did the most. he believed 80% of church members, those who have been baptized, and have joined a church congregation are NOT saved.
Well Bubba we cant jusdge people…
Matthew 7:1–5 ““Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
Why does this matter to YOU middle and high school student?
Because of the repercussion of not being saved. Eternal separation from God in Hell.
As your pastor, I can not, not address this issue in our churches. My job and conviction is to help guide you and direct you in a real relationship with Jesus. Where he is Lord of your life.
I am going to Heaven because I did or do something
Prayed a prayer
walked an aisle
Come on Sunday mornings
Come on Wednesday night
I tell people of Jesus
I was baptized at x age
Those are all works based things you have done, they are works. Look at how Jesus reacts to that
Matthew 7:21–23 ““Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”
If your hope of eternal life is based on anything you have done or are currently doing, i want you to stop and check your life.
Use the mountain illustration
We can never do anything to earn God’s favor. It comes with recognizing the gospel
So how can you have more than just knowledge of Jesus? It comes from a relationship that starts with the Holy Spirit.
Point 2 Jesus gives life with no measure. 34-36.
Lets look at verse 34. Jesus gives the Spirit without measure, he does not hold it back.
As we go into our small group, do not check out. Do you have a relationship with Jesus?
Not head knowledge, but you have the Holy Spirit in you now, and you are living a life that is for Christ.
We have looked at the fruit of spirit weeks ago, but in your small group time you all will go back through those.
My biggest thing is tonight do not give me, hudson, callie, so forth answers you think we want to hear. All of these leaders are more concerned with the truth of where you are with a relationship with the Lord.
Here is why that matters, Share the gospel and lean into the ramifications of Hell.
A relationship with Jesus is more important than a
sports team
where you go to college
a video game
tiktok/ the scrolling of
social media
a friend group
those things
Romans road of Salvation
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 5:8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 10:9 “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:13 “For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.””
Small Group questions
What are some of the ways we know Jesus is from Heaven , and that he is Lord of all?
Look back towards the virgin birth, along with the resurrection, miracles,
Who/what is Lord over your life? And what does it mean that something is Lord over our life?
How do you know if you are a Christian, and not just a cultural christian?
Show the warning from Jesus in Matthew 7:21-23.
A personal relationship that is growing in Jesus. Jesus not being a genie in a bottle, or the big man upstairs.
Also show the fruits of the spirit from Galatians 6:16-26.
Does your life line up with the fruits of the flesh, or the Spirit?
How can your life lead to being more from the Spirit, than the flesh?
