What do I believe God wants them to know? God has given us a new name and we are bear it well

What do I believe God wants them to do? Bear the name of God well
Why? It leads to life for them and others
ME/WE
Have you ever had a time in your life that misunderstood something or believed something falsely and then upon receiving the TRUTH it completely changed your life?
Like you I have had that happen numerous times in my life. I will share a couple of those
NOT SMART
One of those happened in 6th grade when my teach Mr. Demantis went to fill out my quarterly report card and saw my report card had 3 F’s, a D, B, and I had an A in his math class....He pulled my aside and said you are smarter than this. You can do better....it changed me because for most of my life I was told by family members that I was not smart.
Another time was when I was at church and I said “what do I have to offer? I can speak, I mumbled, talked too fast, etc.” And then someone showed me we are all gifted....we all have a gift that God gives us
These changed my life
Today I want to go through the most misunderstood and not well written of the 10 words (decalog) and it is the 3rd Word.
Knowing this WORD is going to shed more light on who we are and also the responsibility we have as sons and daughters of God.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
This is pretty straight forward, right??
Don’t use God’s name as a curse WORD… either in jubilation like the Browns made the playoffs or ways some people were probably using it last night as they watched the Browns game.
BUT IS THIS WHAT THE WORD MEANS?…SAYING GOD’S NAME AS CURSE WORD IS NOT GOOD
NO....this does not mean it’s ok to say God’s name as a curse word....saying God’s name as a curse word is not a good thing and we shouldn’t do it, but that is not what the 3rd word is about
SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
WHAT WILL HELP US IS TO GO INTO LOOK AT TWO HEBREW WORDS…ONE IS TAKE AND THE OTHER IS VAIN
YOU SHALL NOT TAKE IS THE WORD NA’SA THAT WORD MEANS : LIFT (THINK NASA), BEAR, CARRY
God’s name in vain (shav): worthlessly, falsely, or fruitless
We are not to CARRY His NAME in WORTHLESSLY
- A positive way to say this is we are not to represent “we are to honor and represent the name written ” there is no mistake when people see us they see Jesus.
This means
When people see us we are not to be PEOPLE dishonoring the name written upon
That we are not acting in ways contrayer to our new name written upon us.
ATTITUDE AND ACTIONS
I am not saying we are going to be perfect but
This like some of us have with our LAST NAMES AND SPORTS TEAMS… MANY OF KNOW THIS MENTATLIY BECAUSE WE HAVE SAID THIS TO OUR KIDS OUR ABOUT OUR NAME
YOU ARE A PINKOWSKI
YOU ARE A BEARS FAN....THEY THINK AT TIMES THEY CAN ROOT FOR PACKERS…OH
BUT BEFORE WE MOVE ON LETS PAUSE ON SOMETHING…before we talk more about HONORING and REPRESENTING THE NAME WRITTEN UPON US.
Let’s reflect the glorious thing that has happened in your life and our life and in the nation of Israel
What’s that???
WE HAD A NAME CHANGE
HIS NAME IS WRITTEN
WE WERE A CHILD OF WRATH, NOT A CHILD OF GOD
WE WERE IN DARKNESS, NOW WE ARE IN THE LIGHT
NOT ONLY THAT WE ARE KINGDOM OF PRIESTS
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
HIS NAME IS WRITTEN UPON YOU....YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD
THIS IS NOT ONLY TRUE OF US LOOK WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT THE NATION OF ISRAEL IN EXODUS 19 before the word in Exodus 20
Look at what it says…this is before Exodus 20…before the WORDS and how they are to live
‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine;
and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
I RESCUED AND REDEEMED YOU
YOU SHALL BE A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS
What were they BEFORE? KINGDOM OF PRIESTS??
NO, slaves
THIS WAS REAL LITERAL THING ABOUT GOD’S NAME BEING WRITTEN UPON THEM....do you know what it said on the priests garments???WE see this when we LOOK AT THE PRIESTLY GARMENTS
“You shall make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet, ‘Holy to the Lord.’
And you shall fasten it on the turban by a cord of blue. It shall be on the front of the turban.
I WANT YOU TO WALK AROUND WITH PEOPLE KNOWING YOU ARE HOLY TO THE LORD
GOD’S NAME IS WRITTEN UPON THEM
IN A SIMILAR WAY GOD IS SAYING HIS NAME IS WRITTEN UPON US
HIS NAME IS WRITTEN UPON YOU....WE ARE TO HONOR THE NAME, LIFT UP THE NAME
GOD IS SAYING THE SAME THING TO US
LOOK AT PRIESTLY BLESSING WE SAY ALMSOT EVERY WEEK
“Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,
The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
“So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”
THE QUESTION for us is why does this matter and how do we represent his name, honor HIS NAME written upon us???
WHY?
Glory of God
For our good (God’s goodness and joy)…He is the way the truth and life John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Remember where we are in the story…they have witnessed people following Pharaohs way and that led to destruction and enslavement
MANY OF US KNOW THIS TOO, ESPECIALLY AFTER NOT HONORING HIS NAME
and for our neighbors good
THIS IS WHY WE DO IT
NOW THE QUESTION IS HOW DO WE DO IT?
How do we carry the name well??? HONOR the name
BY HAVING OUR ATTITUDE AND ACTIONS BE LIKE JESUS
LOOK LIKE JESUS IN OUR ATTITUDE AND ACTIONS
This is more important
We see Jesus blast the Pharisees for having hard hearts
Paul preach the church in Corinth…you can serve, preach, GIVE BUT YET YOU DO NOT LOVE....
WHAT ATTITUDES ARE WE TO HAVE?
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
NOW THE QUESTION IS HOW DO POSSEESSS THIS ATTITUDES? FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT?
three ways
One focusing on them, focusing on patience
Two spending time with Jesus because who you hang out with rubs off on you
Spending time with the church because who you hang out with changes
Then by our ACTIONS…what are some of the actions we can be??
SALT and LIGHT
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Salt preserves....we are in a world that wants to say oh we have been enlighten....dying churches
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
How are we light?
Doing good works
Being the hands and feet of Jesus
God says honor the name written upon you and by doing so you will give GLORY to God, bring God to you, and good to others
