The Principle of Mastery
God does not approve of behavior that will potentially dominate a person’s life
1 Corinthians 6:12b NASB95
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.
Turn with me to John 4:7-30
Purpose: You can break free from bondage by drinking the water of Jesus Christ instead of the muddy well water.
When in Russia
Was asked to go to a village where the people had probably never seen an American before. Children came out to greet us. The adults came out to see the commotion. We explained through an interpreter what we were doing and a woman offered us a drink of water from her well. As the water came up it did not look like the crystal clear bottled water we had been drinking.
A women came to a well almost 2000 years ago there she met the one who would set her free.
Luke 4:18 (NASB95)
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me ... to preach deliverance to the captives, and ... to set at liberty them that are bruised,

1 Corinthians 9:27 (NKJV)
But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection...
But I keep control of my body, and bring it into subjection
Galatians 5:1 NKJV
Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

Realize the Condition of Your Water

Keep coming back to it

Hebrews 4:13 NASB95
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
Mark 4:22 NKJV
For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.

This Water is Dirty

The sinfulness of it
Romans 3:23 NASB95
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB95
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Isaiah 64:6 NKJV
But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.
The pleasures that the worldly man gets by his ways are hollow, unreal and unsatisfying.
J. C. Ryle

You Must Receive the Cleansing of the Living Water

Once sin has had its way, God is the only One willing to pick up the shattered pieces of your life. The world does not comfort failures—people who are outcasts or hopelessly given over to addiction and passions that are out of control.
Charles Stanley

The Living Water Brings True Satisfaction

and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
John 14:6 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

The Living Water will Wash You Clean

Isaiah 1:18 NASB95
“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
Romans 8:13 NASB95
for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

You Must Recognize the Call of True Worship

She tried to beat around the bush
Tried to switch the subject
The old one two in Somalia
Isaiah 55:1–3 NASB95
“Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk Without money and without cost. “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And delight yourself in abundance. “Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, According to the faithful mercies shown to David.
To worship God in truth is to worship him as he commands.
R. C. Sproul
Philippians 3:3 NASB95
for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh,
John (Principles for Worship)
He was calling us, in the first instance, to see that the worship we offer comes from the depths of our souls, from our inner spirits, from the very cores of our being.
John (Principles for Worship)
But Jesus said that the Father wants people to worship Him according to what He wants... Our worship must be based on God’s self-revelation in Scripture. He is truth and His Word is truth.
Conclusion
Jeremiah 2:13 NASB95
“For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water.
John 4:28 NASB95
So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men,
Sin has sired a thousand heartaches and broken a million promises. Your addiction can be traced back to sin. Your mistrust can be traced back to sin. Bigotry, robbery, adultery—all because of sin. But in heaven, all of this will end.
