Mark 11:1-11; Are We There Yet

Sermon in a sentence: God’s plans and timing are better than ours.

Jesus’ Arrival (vs. 1-8)

Mark finally tells us of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem.
Jesus used his disciples’ to prepare of his entrance into Jerusalem.
The owner must have been willing or knowing of Jesus to allow the disciples to use his animals.
The disciples had to show faith and obedience to Jesus to do something that seemed pretty sketchy.
Jesus arrives as the Davidic king promised by the prophets. (Zech 9:9 & Psalm 118)
Jesus is a humble king to institute a new kingdom.
We are no longer under the reign of sin and death.
Follow the star to a place unexpected Would you believe, after all we've projected A child in a manger? Lowly and small, the weakest of all Unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mother's shawl Just a child Is this who we've waited for?
'Cause how many kings step down from their thrones How many lords have abandoned their homes? How many greats have become the least for me? And how many gods have poured out their hearts To romance a world that is torn all apart? How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Bringing our gifts for the newborn Savior All that we have, whether costly or meek Because we believe Gold for his honor, and frankincense for his pleasure And myrrh for the cross He will suffer Do you believe? Is this who we've waited for?
How many kings step down from their thrones? How many lords have abandoned their homes? How many greats have become the least for me? And how many gods have poured out their hearts To romance a world that is torn all apart? How many fathers gave up their sons for me? Only one did that for me

Jewish Anticipation (vs. 9-10)

The Jews were expecting a military conqueror.
He will come back as a conquerering king.
Their response demonstrated their desire for immediate salvation.
God often uses slow progress to accomplish his purposes.
God waited 25 years to give Abraham a son.
He allowed the Jews to be enslaved for 400 years.
He used the 40 years of Pharaoh’s house to prepare Moses. Then he used another 40 years in a desert.
He was silent for 400 years between the Old and New Testaments.
God has been building his church for the last 2,000 years.
God has been gracious and slow to anger with you and me.

Jesus’ Answer (v. 11)

Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was not what the Jews were expecting.
How many times in our own lives has God shown up and down something besides what we wanted or expected?
Jesus’ response was not against the Romans but the Jews.
How many times have we asked God to do some thing before we have examined ourselves.
Beloved, have you asked Christ to forgive you of your sins? Have you confessed your sin to him?
How are you working on your own sanctification?
Action Steps
Friends, we need to reorient our expectations to God’s planning and timing.
The first step in reorienting our lives is to put our faith in Christ for salvation.
We can set our expectations by growing in our personal holiness.
Pray, Reading, Fellowship, Confession, Repentance
Take steps of obedience through preparation and action.
