Salvation is a gift of grace from God that changes the stony sin stained heart to want to call out to God for salvation, but how will those whom God has called know who to call on for salvation, or why salvation is even needed? Could God elect, change the heart and enter the knowledge of Christ into the minds and hearts of his elect with no other outside influence? He could because he is sovereign and all powerful but this is not what He has chosen as His plan for our redemption. His elect will hear the word of the Gospel, perhaps many times, and when it is God’s time for them to accept and take it in the Holy Spirit will enter and change the very nature of the sinner. God’s plan includes his already saved saints to spread the good news to all, no matter if we think that whom we are witnessing to will care or listen, we give the good news out, we throw the seeds of salvation far and wide, on the rocky ground, in the weed covered ground and onto the fertile soil, because we can’t see the soil of men’s hearts, only God knows where the fertile soil is.

15

Jesus himself charged us the already saved saints of God with going out and spreading the good news. We all are charged with this, we are all sent out to witness and preach the gospel to all tribes and all peoples, those here and closest to us and those in far off remote countries. We also, I believe, are charged with suporting those who do venture off to foreign countries, this exact purpose was one of the reasons Paul was writing to the Romans, it was not to correct some error in their beliefs it was to introduce himself to them so he might visit them and gain support for his planned trip to Spain in order to spread the word. Paul quotes again from Isaiah, this time Isaiah 52:7 “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.””

16

But as I quoted from Jesus’ parable of the soils not everyone that hears this good news will take it in and obey it, Isaiah 53:1 “Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” We preach and spread the good news to all because we do not know who is the elect and who is not, that is not for us to know because we do not bring about salvation we are to love our fellow image bearers enough to give then the truth of God’s word to as many as we can and as often as we can and not to give up on anyone for all can be saved if it is God’s will and if it is God’s will, nothing will keep his elect from receiving the word and being saved.

17

Salvation is from the grace of God so that his elect will have faith from hearing the word of God and have faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior and all be done for God’s glory alone.

18-21

Paul asks if the people have heard and then answers that yes they have. In Romans 1 Paul had already stated that none are without excuse in knowing God. The quote is from the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament, of Psalm 19:4 “Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,” This Psalm is from David and Paul uses it to show that David knew that God has revealed himself to the entire world.

19

Since nobody has an excuse then did the Jews not understand that salvation is from faith from hearing the word of God? Paul gives two quotations from the Old Testament that it was very plain that the Gentiles would be brought in from faith. The first is from Moses in Deuteronomy 32:21 “They have made me jealous with what is no god; they have provoked me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are no people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.” God told Moses who recorded that because of the Jews going after other gods and idols He would bring in the Gentiles, make them jealous of those who are not Jews.

20-21

1. Then he quotes from Isaiah about the Gentiles in Isaiah 65:1 “I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me; I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me. I said, “Here I am, here I am,” to a nation that was not called by my name.”

21

God chose the Jews but they rejected him over and over while God continuosly told them to repent and come back to him offering chance after chance, but Israel were disobedient and contrary and finally rejected the promised messiah and crusified him. the quote is from Isaiah 65:2 “I spread out my hands all the day to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices;”

11:1-6

1

Israel has rejected God gone after other gods and idols, killed the prophets and crusifed the promised Messiah, so has God fully rejected and disregarded the covenant with Israel? By no means! God keeps his promises and his covenants, Paul is a Jew, a Benjamite, and God specifically chose him, Jesus personally showed himself to Paul and changed his heart on the road to Damascus.

2

All those that God foreknew, chose before the foundations of creation will be redeemed, Jew and Gentile. Remember not all that are from Israel are of Israel.

3

Paul uses the words of the prophet Elijah’s against Israel in 1 Kings when Elijah was fleeing for his life and is in a cave when God asks Elijah what he was doing hiding in a cave, 1 Kings 19:10 “He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.””

4

God’s reply to Elijah is that not all of Israel is lost, He is keeping a remant that has not forsaken him and gone after other God’s, Baal in particular. 1 Kings 19:18 “Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.””

5

Just as before God has a remnant of the Jews that have been foreknown, elected, chosen by grace to keep the covenant of Abraham.

6

This chosen remnant is chosen not on anything that they have done but totally out of grace, not based on works, excatly how all of the redeemed are chosen, Jew and Gentile alike.
