[Announce text] In the forth and final week of Advent we turn the announcement of the Incarnation by the angel Gabriel to Mary (Luke 1:26–38). This biblical scene is traditional known as the Annunciation. It is the unexpected announcement that the virgin Mary will conceive the Christ-child through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is this story that takes us closer to preparing our hearts for Christmas Day.
[Scripture introduction] What is unique about this story is that it is only found in Luke’s gospel. The angelic messenger is sent to a particular place in time to an ordinary woman and in her womb will come the King who sits on his Father David’s throne and rule forever.
[Reannounce and read text] Which I invite you to open to Luke’s Annunciation by flipping to Luke 2:26-38. Let’s read the news before Christmas Day.
[Prayer for illumination] O Gracious God, speak to us so we know that everything is possible with you. Cleanse our hearts from sin and open our minds to the truth of your eternal word, amen.
[Introduction] What do you want for Christmas? What we all desperately desire is love. The love that heals a broken heart, and gives joy to the hopeless. This like of love must come from heaven and be given by none other than God himself.
[FCF] How can we know God has given us divine love?
[Scripture bond] The story of Luke explains where love comes from in Luke 2:26-38.
[Proposition] Love comes because nothing will be impossible with God.
[Main point 1] Love has a name and his name is Jesus.
[Main point 2] Love comes through the Holy Spirit.
[Main point 3] Love always says yes to God.
[Conclusion] Nothing is impossible with God, his love is with us through his Son. Let us say, ‘yes.’ Abide in the Spirit and draw near the Son of God.
