The Great Reversal

1-7 - Esther again pleaded for her people to be spared from the decree that had been set against them. She was not content with personal safety, but sought the welfare of her people.

The decree was issued in the king’s name the right to defend themselves from their enemies.

Mordecai was honored in royal apparel and the city of Susa rejoiced. For the Jews it was a day of gladness.

Psalm 30:5 “For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.”

Psalm 30:10–12 “Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me! O Lord, be my helper!” You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!”

Chapter 9:1-15. They fought against their enemies and killed those who had sought their destruction. However, they did not take plunder (even though the decree allowed for it). It was not wanton rioting and destructing, but judicial execution of mortal enemies.

Generational Rejoicing

Chapter 9:16-32. God’s deliverance brings about rejoicing.

This called for feasting and sending gifts to one another!

Esther’s decree made it a generational memorial.

The Lot of Haman became the rejoicing of the Jews. vv 24-25.

Reflection and Response

What do we remember from this story.

God keeps His promises to His people.

Stand for truth and righteousness in a secular culture no matter the personal risk.

God is able to turn the schemes of the wicked into the rejoicing of the righteous.
