Psalm 35:title–3 NKJV
A Psalm of David. 1 Plead my cause, O Lord, with those who strive with me; Fight against those who fight against me. 2 Take hold of shield and buckler, And stand up for my help. 3 Also draw out the spear, And stop those who pursue me. Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.”
Now, the odds of us being attack with sword and shield is low, but guns, break ins, there are bad people out there who seek to prey on the innocent. We can also be set upon by the wicked things of this world.
Psalm 35:4–8 NKJV
4 Let those be put to shame and brought to dishonor Who seek after my life; Let those be turned back and brought to confusion Who plot my hurt. 5 Let them be like chaff before the wind, And let the angel of the Lord chase them. 6 Let their way be dark and slippery, And let the angel of the Lord pursue them. 7 For without cause they have hidden their net for me in a pit, Which they have dug without cause for my life. 8 Let destruction come upon him unexpectedly, And let his net that he has hidden catch himself; Into that very destruction let him fall.
Though David was willing to fight here he entreats the Lord to stand up for Him. David truly believes that he is right in what he is doing and seeks the Lord in it. He then tells the Lord how great it will make him feel;
Psalm 35:9–10 NKJV
9 And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord; It shall rejoice in His salvation. 10 All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like You, Delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, Yes, the poor and the needy from him who plunders him?”
Though David seeks this out, he also sees hid need for the Lord. That He is in need of deliverance.
Psalm 35:11–14 NKJV
11 Fierce witnesses rise up; They ask me things that I do not know. 12 They reward me evil for good, To the sorrow of my soul. 13 But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart. 14 I paced about as though he were my friend or brother; I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother.
they are falsely blaming, bringing accusations, here, David is king, but he was also an incredibly violent man and left a lot of background and reason for many to attack him. But here people are falsely accusing.
Sometimes those we do good for, hurt us. But God tells us, Exodus 23:4 ““If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again.” Davids son would say, Proverbs 25:21 “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;”
Jesus said, Luke 6:27–31 ““But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.”
Psalm 35:15–16 NKJV
15 But in my adversity they rejoiced And gathered together; Attackers gathered against me, And I did not know it; They tore at me and did not cease; 16 With ungodly mockers at feasts They gnashed at me with their teeth.
When folks become angered or hate, they tend to find each other. Misery loves company, we will read Psalm 37:32 “The wicked watches the righteous, And seeks to slay him.”
Psalm 35:17–18 NKJV
17 Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue me from their destructions, My precious life from the lions. 18 I will give You thanks in the great assembly; I will praise You among many people.
As we have seen before, David cries to the Lord that
Psalm 35:19–21 NKJV
19 Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies; Nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause. 20 For they do not speak peace, But they devise deceitful matters Against the quiet ones in the land. 21 They also opened their mouth wide against me, And said, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it.”
Jeremiah 5:26 “‘For among My people are found wicked men; They lie in wait as one who sets snares; They set a trap; They catch men.”
Psalm 35:22–25 NKJV
22 This You have seen, O Lord; Do not keep silence. O Lord, do not be far from me. 23 Stir up Yourself, and awake to my vindication, To my cause, my God and my Lord. 24 Vindicate me, O Lord my God, according to Your righteousness; And let them not rejoice over me. 25 Let them not say in their hearts, “Ah, so we would have it!” Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up.”
Psalm 109:29 “Let my accusers be clothed with shame, And let them cover themselves with their own disgrace as with a mantle.”
Psalm 35:26–28 NKJV
26 Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion Who rejoice at my hurt; Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor Who exalt themselves against me. 27 Let them shout for joy and be glad, Who favor my righteous cause; And let them say continually, “Let the Lord be magnified, Who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.” 28 And my tongue shall speak of Your righteousness And of Your praise all the day long.
Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.”

Psalm 36

David notes the wickedness of Men.
Psalm 36:1–4 NKJV
1 An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes. 2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes, When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates. 3 The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; He has ceased to be wise and to do good. 4 He devises wickedness on his bed; He sets himself in a way that is not good; He does not abhor evil.
Now Paul says Romans 3:17–18 “And the way of peace they have not known.” 18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”” these are people that have no peace with God or His people.
Psalmist says they just stupid, Psalm 94:8 “Understand, you senseless among the people; And you fools, when will you be wise?”
Psalm 36:5–6 NKJV
5 Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgments are a great deep; O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
Makes me think of the third day song. Gods withholding of judement is the only reason we have existence right now. Romans 8:20–22 “For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.”
Psalm 36:7–9 NKJV
7 How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. 8 They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. 9 For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.
When we truly have relationship with God, you see your life and relationship with Him differently. In His light, we actually see life in a different light.
Its why many of us look at people who say they tried God, because how could you have? How can you truly meet such a one then deny Him? How can you see the light and live in darkness?
Psalm 36:10–12 NKJV
10 Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You, And Your righteousness to the upright in heart. 11 Let not the foot of pride come against me, And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away. 12 There the workers of iniquity have fallen; They have been cast down and are not able to rise.
there is an expectancy in knowing God, and being changed in ones heart. Turn to:
Deuteronomy 10:12–17 ““And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good? 14Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the Lord your God, also the earth with all that is in it. 15The Lord delighted only in your fathers, to love them; and He chose their descendants after them, you above all peoples, as it is this day. 16Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer. 17For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.”

Psalm 37

Psalm 37:title–4 NKJV
A Psalm of David. 1 Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb. 3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
we always have to remember, no one gets away with anything. We need to just live. Now this is weird because of David playing the interlocutor of saying how can evil people be so happy, seem so blessed, etc.
if our hearts seek out God (right desires) then we will find ourselves in those.
Psalm 37:5–7 NKJV
5 Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. 6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday. 7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
You don’t try Jesus. You commit to the Lord. You way is your life, your walk. You can’t trust someone you don’t know. Notice what He says He’ll do.
bring forth your righteousness as the light. Your justice (you doing fair, faithfully) in the light then it gives us the contrast.
Cease what?
Psalm 37:8–11 NKJV
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm. 9 For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the Lord, They shall inherit the earth. 10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more. 11 But the meek shall inherit the earth, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
fret. hahrar, become hot, angry, excited. The spark that lights a fire. Those that light it up, that give in to wrath, will be cut off.
the wicked wont inherit eternal life, they will be forgotten into the long places.
Psalm 37:12–15 NKJV
12 The wicked plots against the just, And gnashes at him with his teeth. 13 The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming. 14 The wicked have drawn the sword And have bent their bow, To cast down the poor and needy, To slay those who are of upright conduct. 15 Their sword shall enter their own heart, And their bows shall be broken.
The Lord knows that they wont give in. Wicked one gnash. They can’t stand the idea of believers actually being blessed. They scramble, fight, and go after. But God says they will eventually be judged.
Psalm 37:16–20 NKJV
16 A little that a righteous man has Is better than the riches of many wicked. 17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, But the Lord upholds the righteous. 18 The Lord knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever. 19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. 20 But the wicked shall perish; And the enemies of the Lord, Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away.
Truly like chaff, the wicked ones will be done away with. Forgotten like dust in the wind.
Psalm 37:21–26 NKJV
21 The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives. 22 For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth, But those cursed by Him shall be cut off. 23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him with His hand. 25 I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread. 26 He is ever merciful, and lends; And his descendants are blessed.
The contrast between someone truly walking with God vs not.
begging bread little misleading. the idea is a righteous man works, takes care, gets it done. it doesn't mean we don’t suffer. Even when God captured Israel and took them to Babylon as slaves they ended up the best of citizens.
Psalm 37:27–29 NKJV
27 Depart from evil, and do good; And dwell forevermore. 28 For the Lord loves justice, And does not forsake His saints; They are preserved forever, But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off. 29 The righteous shall inherit the land, And dwell in it forever.
we already know that this isn't salvation that this is what the saved does. notice though, what the Lord loves. He loves to see His creation treat one another righteously. His love is evident in his preserving of His saints.
Psalm 37:30–33 NKJV
30 The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, And his tongue talks of justice. 31 The law of his God is in his heart; None of his steps shall slide. 32 The wicked watches the righteous, And seeks to slay him. 33 The Lord will not leave him in his hand, Nor condemn him when he is judged.
again, if we committed ourselves to the lord, trusted, etc. then our lives are entirely in Him, even how we speak changes. Don’t you notice that in yourself?
Psalm 37:34–38 NKJV
34 Wait on the Lord, And keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it. 35 I have seen the wicked in great power, And spreading himself like a native green tree. 36 Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more; Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found. 37 Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright; For the future of that man is peace. 38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together; The future of the wicked shall be cut off.
Dont fool yourselves if you rejected the Lord. You wont be partying in the next life in Hell. Its weeping and gnashing of teeth.
some try to dismiss hell, but listen, Revelation 20:10 “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
Mark 9 jesus noted that the fire is never quenched. It is never ending. Revelation also tells us there is no escape from the Lake, and that heaven the gates never shut, always open to those who live.
Psalm 37:39–40 NKJV
39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in the time of trouble. 40 And the Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, And save them, Because they trust in Him.
THE LORD. Ours, anyones, is from Him. Listen, I cannot save you. I cannot save myself. But my God made a way for us to live in Him.
