What if i told you that you were worshiping Idols?

We were made to worship, the truth of the matter is that it is easy to fall into Idolatry and not realize it.

How do we do that?

By allowing the cares of the world to slowly creep into first position in our hearts.

Many things happen in our lives to cause this:
We get sick or have an injury and how we feel clouds everything we do. before you know it my physical health becomes in Idol.
The kids have needs, sometimes those needs just keep coming, while you love your family sometimes it feels like you can never catch a break.
sometimes our marriages become an Idol.
sometimes husbands are seem even more needy than the kids, and you love him and wouldn't trade him for anything in the world, why does he have to have all his needs at the same time as everyone else?
wives are no picnics either, they say they want husbands to tell them how they feel, but when we do they don’t seem to get it and then what started out as me trying to “share my feelings” like she told me to, turns into an argument or even worse a silent resentment. I know she loves me but why do I always feel I’m last on her list.
Career/ Education can be on Idol.
While the bible is clear if you don’t work you don’t eat, we can very easily trust in our own ability to achieve or provide and not trust in the Lord for my daily needs.
Am I saying we don’t work and just sit around waiting on God to pay the rent? Not at all we are called to work to meet our needs, the needs of our family, and also that we might have something to give him who has need, but we should not trust in the strength of self ( the flesh) to get those things done.
We know that the scripture teach us in 1 Corinthians 8:1 that “Knowledge puffs up. does that mean that we should not get an education? Certainly not! I Just finished my degree, Bishop has a doctorate degree and started a seminary. We believe in education. Further, the scripture states in 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) Study to show yourself approved.
it is very easy for learning to become an Idol.
Of corse these are just a few examples of how we slip into easy idolatry, you can probably come up with many more and you should allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart and reveal to you any Idols that may have crept ever so slowly into the first place in your heart.

What is the first commandment?

Exodus 20:3 NKJV
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.

1. You shall have no other gods before.

Whatever comes first is what you are worshiping.

Whatever we worship is what we become like.

you might think to yourself, “Cool! I love love. So if I worship my relationship I will become more loving! Sadly that is a lie. a spouse or mate if your not married is a poor God. They will never meet the needs only God can meet. disappointment and heartache will fallow and instead of being more loving living in disappointment and heartache for a life time will lead to a hard heart and bitterness. By the way the same thing stands for family. people are people and they make bad gods.
you can love your family and try to do everything for them. but they are people and you will not get back even what you feel like you put in. as a result you will live feeling unloved unappreciated and unseen.
what has happened? you put them before God.
nothing belongs before God.

2. People were not built to have a divided heart, we will grow to hate the right thing and love the wrong thing.

Matthew 6:24 NKJV
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
although this is talking about God and money specifically the principle is still the same
I cannot worship God and Health…
I cannot worship God and Children...
I cannot worship God and Marriage/relationship…
I cannot worship God and Career or education..
I will Love one and hate the other.

3. Worship is more than the singing we do at Church it is what comes first in my life.

John 4:23 NKJV
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
We cannot worship Him in spirit if we will not ask Him to show us the truth.
if through this sermon you have been convicted that something other than the Lord has moved into first place then simply repent.
if your husband or wife has slipped into first place there is no need to announce that they are no longer first in your life GAWD has to be first. Just repent (go the other direction,) after you put God first you will likely love them better than you did before.
After you put God first your health may not be the biggest issue in your life!
after you put God first you wont get your sense of self-worth from your families reaction to the things you do.
after you put God first you may work better and become a better employee or bossiness owner than you where before.
after you put God first your education is not knowledge that puffs up but wisdom that lifts people up .
