Jesus, Our Mighty God

God, through the Prophet Isaiah, warned Israel about the impending war and invasion from surrounding nations. This is due to their disobedience to God. The nation has been divided.
God disciplined them but He did not abandon them. True enough, the Assyrians came and captured the Northern Kingdom (Isaiah 10) and then a few years later the Babylonians came and conquered the Southern Kingdom and brought them into captivity (Isaiah 13).
In Isaiah 7-9, God comforts them and encourages them to TRUST in Him as He will provide a solution to their fears and worries. God will provide a SAVIOR and not just any human savior - BUT God himself in the flesh!
The Messiah shall be called a Mighty God
Mighty = strength, power, might.
In the NT, the word Mighty (greek = dynamis) means power but it can also denote acts of power or ability.
In the OT, YHWH is called the mighty God
1 Chronicles 29:11–13 11O Lord, you are great, mighty, majestic, magnificent, glorious, and sovereign over all the sky and earth! You have dominion and exalt yourself as the ruler of all. 12 You are the source of wealth and honor; you rule over all. You possess strength and might to magnify and give strength to all. 13 Now, our God, we give thanks to you and praise your majestic name!
Deuteronomy 10:17 17 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God who is unbiased and takes no bribe,
Jeremiah 32:27 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all humankind. There is, indeed, nothing too difficult for me.
In the NT, Jesus is God in the flesh
The promised Messiah, Immanuel is YHWH in the flesh - John 1:14, “14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:18“No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.”
Jesus, Our Mighty God!
Why is Jesus described as a Mighty God? What shall this Mighty God do as the Messiah?
3 Things that the Messiah, the Mighty God will do in coming to this World.
I. Mighty to Rescue
II. Mighty to Reign
III. Mighty to Restore

I. Mighty to Rescue

A. Jesus came to rescue people from their sins - this is the very message of Christmas.
B. Jesus alone can rescue sinners because He alone is sinless.
All human beings that came through Adam were guilty of 3 kinds of sins
1. Original Sin - the sin of Adam imputed to every man - Romans 5:12 “12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.
2. Sinful Nature - which leads man to desire to sin - Romans 7:17–19 “17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.”
3. Individual act of Sin- the sin we commit day after day.
That is why Jesus has to come into this world differently - Through the virgin birth.
Luke 1:35 “The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.”
C. Jesus made a mighty sacrifice to give freedom to the prisoners of sins.
Isaiah 53:2–6 (NET 2nd ed.)
2 He sprouted up like a twig before God, like a root out of parched soil; he had no stately form or majesty that might catch our attention, no special appearance that we should want to follow him.
3 He was despised and rejected by people, one who experienced pain and was acquainted with illness; people hid their faces from him; he was despised, and we considered him insignificant.
4 Buthe lifted up our illnesses, he carried our pain; even though we thought he was being punished, attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done.
5 He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds, crushed because of our sins; he endured punishment that made us well; because of his wounds, we have been healed.
6 All of us had wandered off like sheep; each of us had strayed off on his own path, but the Lord caused the sin of all of us to attack him.
This is the Gospel that saves!
Application:
*Jesus alone can set you free from your addiction, worries, fears, and unbelief - come to Him!
If you are not yet a follower of Jesus, repent of your sins and believe in Jesus. Do not harden your hearts.
If you are a follower of Jesus, Praise Him every day for your salvation.

II. Mighty to Reign

Although God is sovereign, the Scripture looks to a future “realm” or “reign” of salvation.
The Kingdom of God has come when Jesus came. Jesus said, “Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand”.
Yet The Kingdom of God will come in its fullness only when Jesus Christ returns.
In his first coming, Jesus accomplished something that He alone can.
A. Jesus was victorious against sin and death.
1 Corinthians 15:56–57 56 For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. 57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
• So we can now sing...Death could not hold us down, You are the risen King!
• Believers are victorious in Christ - we have overcome the world because of Christ.
In his second coming, Jesus will do something he alone can.
B. Jesus is the conquering king who will judge the living and the dead.
Revelation 20:11–12“11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
Illustration: You can’t get on the airplane if your name is not on the list of passengers and you don’t have the ticket to show for it.
Application:
Make sure that your name is on the Lamb’s Book of Life!
You must Submit to Him. Fear Him. Serve Him. Rejoice in Him

III. Mighty to Restore

The Restoration that Jesus brought for us who believe can be seen now and in the future.
Now: On-going work of Restoration by Christ.
A. Jesus reconciles sinners to the Father - Adoption to Sonship.
John 1:12 “12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,”
B. Jesus gives rest to the restless and hope to the hopeless.
Matthew 11:28–30“28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Romans 8:37–39 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Application: Surrender everything to Jesus! Give your all to Jesus! Give your worries and fears to Him!
C. Jesus is continually restoring us by cleansing us every day when we repent.
1 John 1:8–9 “8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Future: Future work of Restoration by Christ
D. Jesus will restore the world.
Revelation 21:1–5“1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” 5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.””
E. Resurrect the believers to Eternal life.
Philippians 3:20–21 “20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.”
Application:
For believers, Live with hope for today. Live with hope for the future.
For unbelievers, Come to Jesus for he alone can restore you and he alone can rescue you from your sins and eternal punishment.

Conclusion:

Jesus is the mighty God who came to save sinners and reconcile us back to the Father so that we can receive adoption to His family. No one will be able to stop Him from accomplishing His goal of saving and restoring His people because He is the Mighty God who is with us and for us!
For if we find in Christ nothing but the flesh and nature of man, our glorifying will be foolish and vain, and our hope will rest on an uncertain and insecure foundation; but if he shows himself to be to us God and the mighty God, we may now rely on him with safety. With good reason does he call him strong or mighty, because our contest is with the devil, death, and sin, enemies too powerful and strong, by whom we would be immediately vanquished, if the strength of Christ had not rendered us invincible.—CALVIN.
