Introduction:
Altar: Dangerous. It could literally kill you.
Hot… Dangerous…
Should be careful
Could burn yourself if you got to close?
Fire’s dangerous
But when God gives instructions to make the Altar, He doesn’t include these lines:
Be careful with the basin...
“So that they may not die...” ...and again...
“So that they may not die...”
This basin is more than a bird bath, apparently…
What’s is the Basin, Why was it so dangerous, and what was it’s purpose?
The Basin: Medium for Ministry
The Basin: Medium for Ministry
Place and Purpose
Tabernacle: All measured out and symmetrical.
Altar: 7.5 feet x 4.5 feet
Basin:
“You shall make a bason of bronze… Stand: Bronze.
“Put it between the alter and the tent of meeting”
Put water in it so that the Priests can wash their hands and feet.
What do we know about it’s size?
No measurements: Odd
Had to be transportable
“Basin” in Hebrew
Root word= “round”
Rather than focus on its form, the text focuses on it’s function:
Wash hands all the time...
Before you enter the Tent...
Before you do a sacrifice…
Perpetual bathtime!
Purpose:
It was at the center of ministry.
Ministry Center: Keeping things cleaned!
Before Sacrifice=Had to be clean
After Sacrifice and into the Tent=Had to be clean
Practical reality: Get cleaned. Blood on your hands!
You’ve got blood on your hands...
Reformation Study Bible: “the holy God is not to be approached casually.”
Basin=Mediator
The bridge between Sacrifice and Service
Priest:
What would happen if he tripped and knocked over the basin?
What if he tripped, knocked over the basin and said a bad word?
What if only just thought a bad word?
Goes from clean to dirty real quick.
How long could you go without sinning??
And so the Priests had to be careful:
Clean up after sacrifice.
Clean up before service...
Basin gave Priests the Ability to be Clean enough and long enough to do sacrifices for the people and the services in the tent…
Necessary for something different—a different type of medium—to moderate this balance between sacrifice and service.
Prophecy about a fountain!
Basin had to be filled up all the time.
Water had to be replaced over and over again.
BUT there’s this prophecy...
OVERFLOWING!
Zechariah 13:1: “On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.”
Fountain=Overflowing… Doesn’t need to recycle water… One and done...
Jesus: Mediator for Ministry
Jesus!
Purpose of the Basin:
To cleanse before sacrifice and service because they would constantly be in a state of sin.
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
We are cleaned right away!
Jesus was NOT in a state of sin. But yet, he had to prove that he could remain in that state! He had to prove that he was worthy to be slain on our behalf…
King Herod tried to kill the baby boys born in Bethlehem… There’s purpose in Jesus ministry!
Can’t just jump from Christmas to the CROSS!
Importance of Jesus life
Can’t say Jesus came as a baby to die. No, he first had a ministry.
Mark 1: Reenacting Israel:
Reenactment of the Exodus:
John Ministry: Mark 1:8: “I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”
Mark 1:9 “9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.”
Reenactment of the Wilderness
Tempted but didn’t fail
Reenactment of the Kingdom:
Mark 1:15 “15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.””
Mark 1:17 “17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.””
Mark 1:34 “34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.”
Mark 1:38 “38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.””
Throughout his ministry, he was preparing for his sacrifice, and preparing for his service.
His Ministry: “I will live an unspotted life so I can be the unspotted lamb!
HE NEEDED TO PROVE HIMSELF WORTHY TO BE THE LAMB BY TAKING ALL THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OLD TESTAMENT FAILURES AND PREPARING THE CHURCH MOVING FORWARD!
He was able to do all this ministry without sinning! Without having to go back to his cousin John and say, “Hey bud, I tripped while I was trying to heal a leper, I need to do this baptism thing over again...
As a result of Jesus unspotted sacrifice, Jesus doesn’t need to keep cleaning himself from Sacrifice. That’s one and done!
Jesus is the mediator:
Don’t miss the POWER OF THIS STATEMENT!
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
The Church: Mediators of Ministry
Washed
John 13:5–11 “Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
Reminder of Assurance of your Righteousness!
Changed
Exodus 38:8 “He made the basin of bronze and its stand of bronze, from the mirrors of the ministering women who ministered in the entrance of the tent of meeting.”
Cryptic and mysterious…
Odd source of the bronze: ministering women.
Priests saw their reflection in the water. NEW Identity!
Turning away from your old self...
Blog: "These ladies gave their precious bronze mirrors to God! They gave what was prized, precious, and irreplaceable! That’s a glorious picture of the kind of worship that Jesus deserves. They sacrificed their vanity, so that God could be glorified!”
Ministry begins with dying to self
Not if COULD kill you, it SHOULD Kill you!
Entrusted
Not merely what we are forgiven from, but what we are saved for!
Mediators of God’s Ministry and Message:
God has entrusted us with the ministry of reconciliation:
2 Corinthians 5:17–19 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.... [God] gave us the ministry of reconciliation… entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.”
1 Peter 2:9 “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
You have been entrusted with a ministry and a message
Like a Busy Beaver in the Temple, we are called to be constantly servicing within the presence of God like Modern Day Priests.
Busy as a Beaver:
We are called to be constantly aware of our position between sacrifice and service for our King!
What does that look like for you?
The Babylon Bee's Person Of The Year Is This Housewife You've Never Heard Of Who Loves Her Kids And Does Her Best
Challenge: Faithfulness doesn’t mean be less urgent with the Gospel!
Faithfulness it’s faithFUL not faithLESS!
Faithfulness means making your faith part of all your service!
Service: Keeping busy doing the right things for the right legacy.
