The argument of the book
God works through the ordering of families.
God will intervene in the natural order if necessary.
If we need to do something that is out of the ordinary God will make that very plain to us as he did to Joseph.
God explicitly guides and uses different means (in this chapter most are supernatural)
1. A shining that appears
2. Dreams (three times)
3. Fear of a particular ruler.
It is not wrong to point out the lack of good behavior on those who claim to be righteous.
There is not mention of any special event that set John apart like there is for Jesus other then the event surrounding his birth. We don’t need to look for multiple calls to ministry. The evidence to John would have only been the stories he heard about his birth. That was enough.
If even Jesus needed angelic ministration after temptation how much more may we. I need to be thankful for angelic help.
Jesus moved his ministry to minimize conflict. It is not wrong to make moves to protect a ministry.
Would I have followed just like that -- do I follow just like that?
Lord; please be with me in the ministry that you have for me. Not that I seek fame, but I seek that which will honor You and proclaim Your message widely to others.
When you introduce yourself to a group that you are going to be leading, first take them aside and teach them what you are about. Be sure to start with a promise of blessing to come. Then show how what you are doing build off of what went before.
Oh how much in the way of application is here. This is direct teaching on application. The Lord is saying how righteous people in His kingdom will behave.
1. Giving quietly
2. Private humble prayer
3. Not fasting for show
4. Putting your treasure in God's work, trusting Him for provision.
I must admit I do not do well on all of these. Lord grant me wisdom in the right use of resources.
Same as above on how those in the kingdom should live.
Necessity to joining the kingdom -- it is not being forced.
Recognition of authority in Christ's teaching--we need to teach with authority, not of our own but in the authority of the one who has sent us.
Can I really say that I have or will give up all to follow Jesus? Or do I want to set the terms of my discipleship.
Do I really feel compassion for the people to whom I minister – really!
Expect a lot of rejection when doing the work of God.
Jesus delegated authority (not responsibility) and gave instructions on how to use it. – Like any good manager should.
Disciples should earn their living off doing the work of the Master.
Expect rejection; do not let it concern you for the Father has chosen who will respond to the truth.
Don’t believe those who say your ministry is of Satan, it is only a sign of their rejection. But be sure that you are totally in line with the Word of God.
The those who will understand, it will only be a few out of the many.
Since Jesus was rejected having both unexplainable wisdom and power, how much more will we be rejected have only limited wisdom.
Matthew shows that the rejection of chapter 13 does not effect the ability of Jesus to do the signs of Messiah. The rejection did not change Him, it altered the course of the ministry, but the ability or goals of the Messiah.
Don’t let rejection stop you! God is still God and His mission for you has not changed. Continue to do what you can do.
We are often judged by our keeping of religious traditions and not from what is in our hearts. There may be times that we need to respond by highlighting this, even if it does ruffle some folks. But Peter is told to leave these folks alone – those hardened in their way will not be changed let them alone, God will judge them.
Do not worry about validating yourself on demand. The work that you do will be validation enough, do not cease those works.
Do not take offense at rejection. Let God validation be enough for you. continue your ministry regardless.
Lord, may I be careful to conduct my self here, in forgiveness, in seeking the lost, in not giving offense, to reflect what life is like in heaven. Oh may I be a good representative of you.
Lord, may I not fear giving up things and relationships to gain eternal rewards. Yet may I not violate the standards for proper relationships here. Lord give me balance in this.
Lord may I simply be one who serves you will a whole heart. Frogive me my nger and frustrations. May I only live to serve you.
The message of rejection is given by illustration before it is directly stated. What a wonderful and clear way to teach. Noticed that He gives the leaders every chance to come to repentance.
Lord help me to be gentle in the way I deal with people – Help me find the right thing to say.
Lord give me a ready answer about what I know to be true. Not that I may look wise to men, but that your truth might be understand by all.
Lord, place in me all the right attitudes! May I look like you on campus this term and to my neighbors in Lutz. It is going to be hard for me I know, but You Lord, can effect the change. Grant me a tender wand will heart to accept what you must change in me for me to become more like Yourself.
Jesus had to be God! and because of the resurrection still is. Oh, may I be faithful, and observant to recognize the work of God as it invades the natural order.
Father thank you for the salvation that you so freely provided in Jesus. Yes, Jesus is God!
Lord may I never betray your work, and the one who loved me so, out of a sense of frustration or for the sake on personal gain.
It is often best not to answer false charges. If they are false they will prove themselves to be just that.
! Concluding general remarks
