Call to Worship Text
2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

Opening Prayer

Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ,

For all the benefits Thou hast won for me,

For all the pains and insults thou hast borne for me.

O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,

May I know Thee more clearly,

Love Thee more dearly,

And follow Thee more nearly

For ever and ever.

Introduction

More Perfect Illustrations: For Every Topic and Occasion Thankfulness: Very Short Gripe Session

A party of pioneers on the Oregon Trail suffered for weeks from a scarcity of water and grass for their animals. Most of the wagons had broken down, causing endless delays in the stifling heat. A feeling of fretfulness and futility prevailed. Optimism and cheer were gone. Courage was in limited supply.

One night the leaders called a meeting to air complaints. When they gathered around the campfire, one man stood up and said, “Before we commence our grief session, don’t you think we should at least first thank God that he has brought us this far with no loss of life, with no serious trouble from the Indians, and that we have enough strength left to finish our journey?”

The other settlers agreed. After the brief prayer, all that could be heard were the cries of a distant pack of wolves. There was otherwise stone silence around the campfire, because no one had any grievances they felt were important enough to voice.

They suddenly realized if they couldn’t be satisfied with what they’d received, they could at least be thankful for what they’d escaped. Thankfulness enabled them to see the mercies of God they had been overlooking.

Synopsis

The financial burden of God’s work has always been shared amongst God’s people. In the OT, this was mainly by compulsory tithes; in the NT by voluntary contributions.

The Account collection of compulsory tithes and other religious taxes

Tithes

Le 27:30
Leviticus 27:30 (ESV) — 30“Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.
See also Nu 18:21
Numbers 18:21 (ESV) — 21“To the Levites I have given every tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service that they do, their service in the tent of meeting,

Redemption money

Ex 30:12; Nu 3:46–47
Exodus 30:12 (ESV) — 12“When you take the census of the people of Israel, then each shall give a ransom for his life to the Lordwhen you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them.
Numbers 3:46–47 (ESV) — 46And as the redemption price for the 273 of the firstborn of the people of Israel, over and above the number of the male Levites, 47 you shall take five shekels per head; you shall take them according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel of twenty gerahs),

Temple taxes

2 Ch 24:5; Mt 17:24
2 Chronicles 24:5 (ESV) — 5And he gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah and gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that you act quickly.” But the Levites did not act quickly.
Matthew 17:24 (ESV) — 24When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?”
Theology:
This brings me to the three fold use of the law (This is the cerminnal law which is completed and fulfilled in Christ. The mandatory offerings for the temple has been fulfilled in Jesus, so this is not the same today. (Expand a bit for uses that deal with talking others today)
Application:
What this establishes for us is that giving is an expected form of worship to God. So you can trace the charge of God to give from the OT. Those who say otherwise are mistaken.
This also is how we come up with the teaching of giving of your time, talents, and treasure.
It is from the OT that we get the 10% number

The Action collection of voluntary contributions

Let’s look at the uses that the collections were used for:

For the tabernacle

Ex 36:3
Exodus 36:3 (ESV) — 3 And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning,
Numbers 7:2–3 (ESV) — 2 the chiefs of Israel, heads of their fathers’ houses, who were the chiefs of the tribes, who were over those who were listed, approached 3 and brought their offerings before the Lord, six wagons and twelve oxen, a wagon for every two of the chiefs, and for each one an ox. They brought them before the tabernacle.
Numbers 7:84–88 (ESV) — 84 This was the dedication offering for the altar on the day when it was anointed, from the chiefs of Israel: twelve silver plates, twelve silver basins, twelve golden dishes, 85 each silver plate weighing 130 shekels and each basin 70, all the silver of the vessels 2,400 shekels according to the shekel of the sanctuary, 86 the twelve golden dishes, full of incense, weighing 10 shekels apiece according to the shekel of the sanctuary, all the gold of the dishes being 120 shekels; 87 all the cattle for the burnt offering twelve bulls, twelve rams, twelve male lambs a year old, with their grain offering; and twelve male goats for a sin offering; 88 and all the cattle for the sacrifice of peace offerings twenty-four bulls, the rams sixty, the male goats sixty, the male lambs a year old sixty. This was the dedication offering for the altar after it was anointed.

For the temple

1 Ch 29:1–9
1 Chronicles 29:1–9 (ESV) — 1 And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced, and the work is great, for the palace will not be for man but for the Lord God. 2 So I have provided for the house of my God, so far as I was able, the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, besides great quantities of onyx and stones for setting, antimony, colored stones, all sorts of precious stones and marble. 3 Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God: 4 3,000 talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the house, 5 and for all the work to be done by craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver. Who then will offer willingly, consecrating himself today to the Lord?” 6 Then the leaders of fathers’ houses made their freewill offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and the officers over the king’s work. 7 They gave for the service of the house of God 5,000 talents and 10,000 darics of gold, 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000 talents of bronze and 100,000 talents of iron. 8 And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, in the care of Jehiel the Gershonite. 9 Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.
Really practically: You can see the men lead the way in giving on behalf of there houses. So men you need to determine what you are to bring in worship before God. This is not a place for you to abdicate to your wife. You can see that every home brought something in
Next lesson the leaders of the nation and the priest taught that you should give. So in your homes teach your children, and grandchildfren and each other that giving is part of the faith.
You can see in 1 Chronicles 29:9
1 Chronicles 29:9 ESV
9 Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.
Giving leads to rejoicing
Givingf must be done with a whole heart, don’t give with a grudge or motive but from faith.
giving leads others wo rejoice, see how David reacted.
You can see again the actions of the Craftsman (v5)

For the rebuilding of the temple

Ezr 1:4
Ezra 1:4 (ESV) — 4 And let each survivor, in whatever place he sojourns, be assisted by the men of his place with silver and gold, with goods and with beasts, besides freewill offerings for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.”
Application:
The context here is the rebuilding of the house of the Lord after the exile. We to have a need (explain about the A/C, the siding from the hurricane, and the faith fund to come for building needs in January. We are to let you know when things are afoot. It is important that you give for the maintence of the church. This facility is important to our worship, it is facility repair issues that sink churches when they get out of hand. (reference book read on topic)

For the teaching ministry of the church

Galatians 6:6 (ESV) — 6Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches.
Luke 8:1–3 (ESV) — 1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.
Philippians 4:15–16 (ESV) — 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again.
1 Timothy 5:17–18 (ESV) — 17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”
Your giving helps support the ministry here and with the Missionaries we support globally and in the US. You’re blessing allows us to teach others about Jesus and teach and create more disciples. Your giving makes this possible. Your gifts when put into the hands of those out their evangelizing are helping them bring more souls to the father side. Your treasure on earth is turned into imperssible treasure in heaven that you will never loose and will receive for your reward!

For the relief of the poor

Ro 15:26; 1 Co 16:1
Romans 15:26 (ESV) — 26For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem.
1 Corinthians 16:1 (ESV) — 1Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do.
See also Ac 2:45; Ac 4:34–35; Ac 11:29–30
Acts 2:45 (ESV) — 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
Acts 4:34–35 (ESV) — 34There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.
Acts 11:29–30 (ESV) — 29So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. 30 And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

The right attitude to collections

Generosity

Ex 36:4–6; 2 Co 8:11; 2 Co 9:6
Exodus 36:4–6 (ESV) — 4 so that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task that he was doing, 5 and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.” 6 So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing,
2 Corinthians 8:11 (ESV) — 11So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have.
2 Corinthians 9:6 (ESV) — 6The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Cheerfulness

2 Co 9:7
2 Corinthians 9:7 (ESV) — 7Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Discipline

1 Co 16:2–4
1 Corinthians 16:2–4 (ESV) — 2On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come. 3And when I arrive, I will send those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem. 4 If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me.

Humility

Mt 6:2–4
Matthew 6:2–4 (ESV) — 2“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

A willing spirit

2 Co 8:12
2 Corinthians 8:12 (ESV) — 12For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.

A sacrificial spirit

Mk 12:41–44; 2 Co 8:1–4
Mark 12:41–44 (ESV) — 41And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
2 Corinthians 8:1–4 (ESV) — 1We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—

The aim of collections

To share burdens equally

2 Co 8:13–15
2 Corinthians 8:13–15 (ESV) — 13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”

To supply people’s needs

2 Co 9:12
2 Corinthians 9:12 (ESV) — 12For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.

To arouse thanksgiving

2 Co 9:12–15
2 Corinthians 9:12–15 (ESV) — 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13 By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15 Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

The faithful administration of collections

2 Ki 22:7; Ac 11:30; 2 Co 8:19–21
2 Kings 22:7 (ESV) — 7 But no accounting shall be asked from them for the money that is delivered into their hand, for they deal honestly.”
Acts 11:30 (ESV) — 30 And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.
2 Corinthians 8:19–21 (ESV) — 19 And not only that, but he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this act of grace that is being ministered by us, for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our good will. 20 We take this course so that no one should blame us about this generous gift that is being administered by us, 21 for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of man.
