I wanted to call in sick this morning
Today’s passage is not easy.
The joy of expository preaching is that you can’t just jump past the challenging pieces of scripture.
This is a challenging scripture for me this morning.
Chapter 8 of Romans is so victorious
Romans 8:1 HCSB
1 Therefore, no condemnation now exists for those in Christ Jesus,
Romans 8:38–39 HCSB
38 For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, 39 height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!
Has God failed to be faithful to Israel? If God has failed to be faithful to Israel then how can I trust God to be faithful to me?
Romans 9:6–8 HCSB
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7 Neither are they all children because they are Abraham’s descendants. On the contrary, your offspring will be traced through Isaac. 8 That is, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but the children of the promise are considered to be the offspring.
v.7
Abraham had two lines of descendants. Abraham’s wife said because I am not having children then maybe I can build a family through our Egyptian slave Hagar.
Abraham had a child with Hagar and his name was Hagar. Paul is pointing out that not all of Abraham’s descendants are saved because look at Ismael.
God remains faithful to His promises and God is true to His word.
God said he would give Abraham a son and that through his son His offspring would be as numerous as the stars in the sky.
v.8
Romans 2:28–29 HCSB
28 For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, and true circumcision is not something visible in the flesh. 29 On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart—by the Spirit, not the letter. That man’s praise is not from men but from God.
Salvation by the Mercy of God alone
Romans 9:10–13 HCSB
10 And not only that, but also Rebekah received a promise when she became pregnant by one man, our ancestor Isaac. 11 For though her sons had not been born yet or done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to election might stand— 12 not from works but from the One who calls—she was told: The older will serve the younger. 13 As it is written: I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau.
This screams for a posture of humility
What did you do to deserve Salvation? Are you able to save yourself? Are you a good person? Is it because of your goodness that God saved you?
Romans 3:9–11 HCSB
9 What then? Are we any better? Not at all! For we have previously charged that both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin, 10 as it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one. 11 There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.
Romans 9:11–13 HCSB
11 For though her sons had not been born yet or done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to election might stand— 12 not from works but from the One who calls—she was told: The older will serve the younger. 13 As it is written: I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau.
Malachi 1:2-3 is quoted here
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eight: Did God Make a Mistake? (Romans 9)

Romans 9:13 is a reference to Malachi 1:2–3 and refers to nations (Israel and Edom) and not individual sinners. God does not hate sinners. John 3:16 makes it clear that He loves sinners. The statement here has to do with national election, not individual. Since God’s election of Israel does not depend on human merit, their disobedience cannot nullify the elective purposes of God. God is faithful even though His people are unfaithful.

Romans 9:14 HCSB
14 What should we say then? Is there injustice with God? Absolutely not!
Is God unjust because He chose Jacob over Esau? Absolutely not!
Romans 9:15 HCSB
15 For He tells Moses: I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
It is based on the character of God and His mercy not our actions
Moses after the Golden calf incident. Moses and God going back and forth. God says they are Moses’s whom he brought with him and Moses says no they are yours God and these are your people.
Exodus 33:12–20 HCSB
12 Moses said to the Lord, “Look, You have told me, ‘Lead this people up,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. You said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ 13 Now if I have indeed found favor in Your sight, please teach me Your ways, and I will know You and find favor in Your sight. Now consider that this nation is Your people.” 14 Then He replied, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 “If Your presence does not go,” Moses responded to Him, “don’t make us go up from here. 16 How will it be known that I and Your people have found favor in Your sight unless You go with us? I and Your people will be distinguished by this from all the other people on the face of the earth.” 17 The Lord answered Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Then Moses said, “Please, let me see Your glory.” 19 He said, “I will cause all My goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim the name Yahweh before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He answered, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.”
Romans 9:16 HCSB
16 So then it does not depend on human will or effort but on God who shows mercy.
